Hide Life

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what the life of a hide is after it is tanned? I have heard that the hair starts to pull after a while? I have some animals that might not get mounted for awhile and I am hoping that the hides will still be good.

Thanks!

Eric,

It really depends on a lot of factors. The best thing to do is to put them into the freezer. They last a long time that way. I would soak them in water for 15 to twenty minutes, let them hang until no water is dripping off them anymore, maybe thirty minutes, then role them up tight in a bag and put them in the freezer. We have had a few hides that we have mounted that were 5 + years old this way. If you just leave them out what happens is the leather gets kind of rotten I guess you could say. When you soak them up they are really fragile. With just light pressure you can basically just rip them into pieces. It makes them almost impossible to mount. They won't hold stitching, you can't tuck the lips, it becomes a big mess. Hope this helps!
