Thoughts on Thermal Imaging

Recommended Posts

I believe thermal imaging is only reasonable in areas that the critters are wearing Ghillie suits and have been issued bullet proof vests !

At SHOT Show last year I played with a "new" thermal/IR monocular that was about the size and weight of a can of soda. Even with all the bright flashy lights and other things iside the giant convention hall you could clearly see people walking around (crotch, feet, and pits were bright, and the beer in their hands cold and dark, pretty cool to play with!) With a letter from my agency I could have played with one on loan for the cool price of $5k for six months! The unit to buy was around $12K. With its 6X zoom I went from tactical to hunting thoughts almost imediatly. The thoughts of scanning a canyon in five minutes compared to five hours was/is tempting! But for fair chase, I don't think it should be allowed, game recovery perhaps but then again their usefulness would in that aspect would be rather limited.

It would take a lot of the fun out of it for me. I happen to really enjoy the 5 hours looking in a canyon for deer as much if not more than the moment of finding one. I don't think the technology will stop except for individuals saying enough is enough for me. To each their own. This, and some other stuff out there is not for me.

Thermal imagery should only be allowed when baiting ain't cuttin' it. LOL

I could see TI used for safety reasons. Locating fellow recreationist's by their heat signature could diffuse potentially unsafe situations. That being said, if I had a TI unit it'd likely be used to locate booners.
