Guest borderboy Report post Posted October 12, 2009 To me 29 means only one place - Horseshoe Canyon. My dad showed me a couple of places where he has taken several LARGE bucks. It's very rough country. It is steep, steep, and steep. Also rocky ... We (now only I) just head up, and up. I stay at the top. I only shoot at big bucks because it's just too much work to bring anything but a nice buck out of. Not that that I always get a big buck. It's the hunt that I am after. I have matched wits with many a bucks, big and small. I guess it all depends on what "kind" of hunter you are. As long as you are a legal and ethical hunter it's all good in my book. If you would like some personal info - drop me an email. It might cost you though. Like a half gallon of pistachio ice cream. Or vanilla with a bag of Ruffles. Yum. AZantlerhead Report post Posted October 12, 2009 Jason, I hunted unit 29 several years ago. I hunted both the east and west side of the Chiricahuas. There are a lot of deer, but also tons of hunters. I recommend you stay away from the Rucker canyon area unless you don't mind being shoulder-to-shoulder with other hunters. I scouted that area out and had a great plan for opening day, but then the whole place turned into a city of trailers, generators, atvs and people. I got disgusted and drove to around toward Rodeo NM and went in the horsehsoe canyon road.******** There were other hunters there, but I managed to find an isolated canyon with a lot of bucks*********. Nothing big, but at least I brought some venison home! ******If you like hunting isolated areas there is plenty of it in the wilderness area there. I didn't get a chance to scout that out, but any area with a good sprinkling of springs will hold a lot of deer.******* Amanda YUP YUP!!!! Awesome advice. A. Find isolated canyon/water source with good sign "fresh". + B. Glass and watch your " hidden spring(s)" from dark to dark. + C. Shoot Buck comeing/going to spring. = Backstraps. Sounds easy right? It's not but hope that helps a little. Wishing you a great hunt Hope I can git-r-done this year too. WATER is our friend. "Honey Holes" are truthfully centered on "Water Holes" , It's code talk

Red Rabbit Report post Posted October 13, 2009 Looks like there was a lot more friendly advice back in 2003... It still goes on via PMs, emails and phone calls. Sent a "friendly" PM this evening. Was the recipient of friendly help for 34A two years ago and still this year. The world ain't in "that" handbasket yet Seems one is often more willing to help out a beginning hunter also.
