You could kill one with a 223, would you want to? Lol, yeah, I would use a 223 over a 338 pushing a 300 gr pill any day, lol. I'd flinch so bad, I'd be spraying shots all over the hillside, they'd have to rename it lead canyon! Big calibers=flinching= misses or bad shots. And I know, I know, not all the time, was just my opinion. Never said I have problem with big guns, just not something I would use. And, to get back to the original question, no, a 300 wthrby is not too big for coues. HAHA. Yes you are going to be more susceptuible to flinching with big guns that kick. One should not attempt such a thing without training to shoot heavy recoil guns. I agree. As far as the bigger guns destroying the animal, your bullet selection will determine that. That bear I just shot with the berger just passed thru. Passed thru both shoulders and the spine, but the enterance and exit holes were the same size.
