Scooter Report post Posted August 21, 2012 Hey guys. Being from New York, I've never tried going after deer in velvet... Or from a ground blind. I have some concerns about insect bites as the medication I am currently taking seems to have made me an absolute target for anything that bites. Back in July I was literally attacked by swarms of No-See-Ums and found out I am allergic to the bites! I have a Thermacell, and I know to use that while in the blind, but I'll be camping out a few days and I need to know some tips and tricks to keep from becoming the guy with "chicken Pox"... I know about permethrin clothing treatment and deep woods Off, Just wondering what other guys use and what might also work to keep me from alerting the deer in the early archery season. ready2hunt Report post Posted August 21, 2012 get some of that 3-d camo clothing. Its mesh and completely breathable yet can cover your whole body and keep the bugs off. If you are hunting in the desert then there is not much you can do about the heat however this may be a good option for you. You can wear shorts and a t-shirt underneath to keep cool. I like thermacells but they do not seem to work as well as they advertise....not to much else you can do about bugs...I know there is a desert bush that is a natural repellent as well. Anyone remember the name of it??? I would say check out 3-d camo cover clothing though. Bass pro, cabelas, sportsmans all carries it
Viper Report post Posted August 21, 2012 Oh man, those knats tear me up. They get in my nose and ears and bite the heck out of my face, neck and arms. I still have little bumps from last year. I started carrying a small can of spray and a face net, and long sleeves if it's not too hot. I recently bought a bandana with a repelant treatment, but haven't tried it yet. I need you as a hunting partner to keep the bugs off me
JLW Report post Posted August 21, 2012 best for that is get a bug suit! they have 3d ones as stated above but they also have lighter ones as well. you'll probably just need the top if you're wearing pants but they sell as a set. I don't use chemicals and I just got a thermocel. My wife uses earth smelling deet and swears by it but I can still smell the deet so I'm sure the animals can too. as for your face the suit comes with a full head net but I do not recommend shooting your bow with it. I had trouble seeing the pins and didn't feel comfortable but may help around camp. with all the rain down there you should have a nice heard/flock/gagle or whatever you call em of chiggers. lol! Good luck! James
Scooter Report post Posted August 21, 2012 I have one of the non 3-D bug tamer suits in camo... I totally forgot about it until y'all mentioned it!!! It has a few tears in the leg but I could sew it up tight!!! The face net would be pretty easy to take on and off in the blind- what about treating it with permethrin? does that stuff smell? And JLW- you ain't kidding bro! Them little bugs are everywhere and HUNGRY!!! I get bit just walking the dogs around the block...

firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted August 21, 2012 When ever I shoot my bow, or do some reloading at my parents house I stick sheets of fabric softner near exposed skin. Seems to work really well. For some reason, they like to target the part of my ankles that never get exposed... Guess they like my soft, sweet white skin!

Yes, my wife uses dryer sheets tucked in the top of her socks or waist band. Works for mosquitos anyhow...not sure about the knats. They are usually scented though. I also heard about the fabric softner among many other uses it has... my wife now saves all the used ones! but the scent is a killer for me. James
