bigorange Report post Posted August 19, 2012 Sitting by the fire in 27...bulls bugling, cows talking. Awesome day scouting. Lots of elk, lots of fresh sign including a fresh rub with velvet still hanging. Pleasantly surprised at the road situation and a lot of barley on the slopes south of Alpine keeping the elk happy.
Coach Report post Posted August 19, 2012 Looks like it's going to be an awesome rut. I heard bulls bugling as early as July 5th. My buddy who lives in Torreon in Show Low said he heard a ton of bugling in the mid afternoon a day or two ago from his home office. Congrats to all you bull tag holders. Should be a really great rut hunt this year.
AZ_XL7 Report post Posted August 19, 2012 I'm in 1 and didn't see a bull today. Checked all our usual spots. Lots of cows but no bulls.

bigorange Report post Posted August 20, 2012 We heard some bugling one afternoon, but other than that it was all at night and right before first light. We saw mostly cows but also a couple of bulls...seemed like young ones that were already trying to herd cows. Here's hoping it will be an awesome rut hunt... Pine Donkey Report post Posted August 20, 2012 Young ones herding cows this early is a good sign. The big boys have played this game before. They will let the young ones do the herding work, then walk in, kick butt, and take the ladies. Might be a good rut!
