Shedhunteraz Report post Posted August 15, 2012 While hiking yesterday I came accross this sow and 2 cubs. She had come over the top of the ridge, as I was making my way up to it. I froze, then started making noise with sticks hoping she would leave. She just stared at me and kept walking slowly toward me. I always have my gun and pepper spray, so I got both out. I finally had to fire a warning shot, which did absolutely NOTHING ( but tree her cubs)! By now I start to panic, shaking etc. and surprsingly thought to take a picture because nobody would believe this. I called my husband, but the phone kept cutting out. I have read enough articles on this topic to have an idea of what to do.This is the 4th bear I have seen while hiking, but first momma with cubs. I slowly started backing up giving her enough space, to not make her feel cornered or threatened. She waited for her cubs and FINALLY ran off. This could have easily gone a very different way. Someone up there must love me longest 10 minutes of my life!!!! Picture is actual distance between us.

bonecollector Report post Posted August 15, 2012 Exciting hike. I've ran into the same 2 cubs on 2 of my hikes in and never saw the momma bear. Makes you nervous cause you know she is around close by.

JLW Report post Posted August 15, 2012 Kevin told me about your adventure yesterday! WOW! I would have been a bit nervous too! ( That's putting it "G" version ) I had an encounter a few weeks back and did not have a gun... never had a visual on the bear but could hear it huffing. I got the heck outta there! Good times! LOL! Be safe out there! James
