rossislider Report post Posted August 14, 2012 For some time now I’ve wanted to get an AR-15 for general predator hunting. I’ve come to the conclusion that I had better get moving on this before the election, just incase our current President should win a second term. If this clown wins a second term there is no telling what damage he might do to gun owner rights and hunting in general. With this in mind I have been looking largely at the Bushmaster Varminter .223s. A number of friends have suggested I would be much better off taking my money to a good gunsmith and having them build my rifle for me. They seem to believe I could build a much better rifle for the same money. Never having had a rifle built before I’m not sure where to start or who to talk to. Can someone point me in the direction of a good reputable gunsmith who can help me with this project at a fair price (preferably someone in the east valley)? Thanks
Kaffer62 Report post Posted August 14, 2012 Or you could have fun and build one yourself. I built one this past year and it has been a blast! You can put them together with minimal tools.

Sounds fun, but how does a first timer go about doing this with confidence they won't ultimately blow their face off?
DUG Report post Posted August 14, 2012 I bought an Armalite 20" flat top and added Magpul stuff to it. It is so accurate my girls love shooting it. Last weekend they killed a big old rock with it. There are plenty of off the shelf AR's that will shoot awesome.
rcdinaz Report post Posted August 14, 2012 I believe this is one of the specialties of the gun smith out at the Rio Solado Range. He has written a book as well but I can't recall his name as I have not been out there in a couple of years. I recall he usually has a waiting list Or at least used to. sjvcon Report post Posted August 15, 2012 Before you build one in .223, look at the 6.8 SPC and 6.5 Grendel. Just sayin' .......
rcdinaz Report post Posted August 15, 2012 Good call the Grendel looks like a really great round!
PRDATR Report post Posted August 15, 2012 Before you build one in .223, look at the 6.8 SPC and 6.5 Grendel. Just sayin' ....... Way overkill for a varmint round. Better suited for deer.
rcdinaz Report post Posted August 15, 2012 mehhh! I say find bigger varmints. The guys in the predator masters forum seem to disagree, they seem giddy about the AR15 Grendel. Speer makes a 90gr TNT varmint bullet that would be awesome coyote medicine. Okay I am done hijacking the thread now...
bonecollector Report post Posted August 15, 2012 You can get the remington R-15 for less money than the bushmaster and its the same exact gun.
Kaffer62 Report post Posted August 15, 2012 here is a ton of info online. This link will give you a general idea of what's involved.. surprisingly. Not as much as you would think...... http://www.midwayusa.com/General.mvc/Index/how-to-build-ar-15-rifle
sjvcon Report post Posted August 16, 2012 It's not like building a 1911...that's for sure. Varmint guys I know love the bigger rounds for coyotes, bobcats and lion. Will also work for Coues and some say Speed Goats too...though I prefer something with more pop for the later.
yotebuster Report post Posted August 16, 2012 I would go with a 243 WSSM or 25 WSSM. Enough KE for deer easily and way better long range varmint round. Dtech rifles in MN made mine. It's sweet.
