Bearclaw Report post Posted August 14, 2012 Anyone willing to share information on this unit? I drew a late-season December white-tail tag. From the initial reading I have done on the AZGF web site, it's obvious that access to the white-tail habitat is the biggest challenge. I've never hunted this unit before, but have hunted 30A to the east. Any tips or personal experiences on this unit would be appreciated, especially on how best to handle traversing the land access issue. Thanks in advance.

Scooter Report post Posted August 14, 2012 access to the higher elevations is an issue- but there's still plenty of good spots you can go... Pretty sure contacting Mr. Ward would be in your best interest.
Pine Donkey Report post Posted August 15, 2012 Access is only a problem if you want to drive everywhere in the Mules. If you are willing to take the "foot shoe-leather express" there is plenty of areas to hunt. Coues are found in most parts of the unit.
Dave B Report post Posted August 15, 2012 I also have the 30B late December whitetail hunt and would welcome any words of wisdom I hunted early November whitetail hunts in 30B in 2011 and in 2006. I tried the east side of the Mule Mountains south east of Tombstone but had no luck both times. I was thinking of trying further south this year. This year for some reason I put 30B late December as my first choice. I just had a feeling this would be my year for my first coues. Good luck on your hunt, Dave B P.S. Pick up the 30B Game and Fish map if you can. I got mine from Map World in Phoenix.
Snapshot Report post Posted August 15, 2012 I have taken a few deer out of 30B, and know some spots pretty well, but I won't give up my hidey holes. Like alot of places, you got to get away from the roads and main trails. Lots of weekend warriors, and rock climbers, and hikers out there on the west face when the weather is nice. Don't overlook some of the riparian areas in the big washes. Lots of cover, and places to hide, still hunting techniques.

mklong40 Report post Posted August 16, 2012 Hunted 30b several years back. We went out of Tombstone but then put the miles on the boots. Saw some decent deer towards the southwestern part of the range. Just have to really hike back in there. Oddly enough, we saw some coues low too, where the Muleys where hanging out. 200"mulie Report post Posted August 17, 2012 Dragoons is your best bet much more public land, dont go into the stronghold. Show up a day early and glass you'll find deer. December hunt should be a good one, and yes make sure where private property is get a map.

Ya make sure you are shooting the correct species seen mulies and whitetail in same areas.
Pine Donkey Report post Posted August 18, 2012 Whitetails are found in most of the unit. Much of the muley habitat has coues in it. There is not a part of the unit where you do not have to be careful and make sure of the species.
