3Coues3 Report post Posted August 13, 2012 Does anyone know if Federal 209A or CCI 209M primers will fit in a Knight DISC? I am new to muzzleloading and I think I am going to try the BH209 and wanted to know what the best primer would be?
Scooter Report post Posted August 14, 2012 I had a DISC rifle a few years ago and I used Winchesters and CCI's... As for the BEST primer- well you'd have to try a few different types over a chrony to figure that out. Lately, there has been a trend to go to a slower burning muzzleloading 209 primer such as the Remington Kleenbores and the Triple Se7en style ones. They've slowed the ignition rate a little bit in order to burn more powder closer to the breech before the load starts to move down the barrel- thus creating more pressure and velocity at the muzzle. The "hotter" shotgun 209 primers are thought to have been pushing the load down the barrel while burning the propellant the entire length of the barrel (and sometimes outside the barrel) and losing some pressure which translated to some losses in velocity. For most folks, regular old shotgun primer 209's are more than adequate if you are loading and seating the bullets correctly. I shoot whatever primer is the cheapest which happened to be CCI's the last time my local retailer had them. I shoot CCI 209m's behind 2 Triple Se7en Magnum pellets pushing a 295gr Powerbelt Aerolite or a Hornady 300gr XTP sabot. I get about 1920-1950fps consistently out of a clean barrel- but after about three or four shots I've had a few random ones get up slightly over 2000.
