Bow hunting turkey: which points to use

Recommended Posts

I want to try the early turkey hunt using a bow. I was wondering if broad heads are the best tool for the job?

Also, since I've never done an early (late summer) turkey hunt, what is the best way to hunt them? Since they're not in the rut, I assume that calling would be useless. Is it best just to stalk near a treeline/meadow border?

Any info (and general locations, i.e. hunt units) would be appreciated.

Few years ago we hunted them out of a blind a few hundred yards away from water. All three of us rages out opening day. 2 of us used bloodrunners and did some real damage. My friend had an exit hole on his bird the size of a baseball. Try to find a water hole with a lot of sign then place a blind out of sight from the water to reduce theft and catch them coming or leaving the water. Good luck!

sit water, or just hike thru the woods. Chances are they are going to be silent. As far as broadhead, I don't think it matters much. I shot one with a 100 3 blade wac em' and it looked like it swallowed a grenade. Something about their skin makes for nasty wound channels.

If you can find them and break up the flock you can do some calling. They are like quail and once the flock is broken up they will call to relocate each other.

I have been able to do this twice in the fall hunts and it can really be fun. The first time we broke up a big flock (20+ birds) and had them running and flying every where.

About 10 or 15 minutes later me and my brother hear a lone hen yelping so we set up and made a few yelps. 30 seconds later here comes a hen running full boar right at us. 15 yrd shot it was a hoot

I happened upon a small flock yesterday while driving out of an area I had dropped my dad off at. I was less than twenty yards and could barely hear them clucking back and forth. I've never hunted turkey with a bow, where do you aim on the body? Does it matter?
