coueshunter Report post Posted June 30, 2006 There are much more informed guys about 23 than me, but a good general area to start could be cherry creek road. There is alot of area throughout and there are alot of roads branching off cherry creek road that can get you into some good areas. Up on top is pretty good to look around and figure out the area............Allen..........
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted June 30, 2006 There are several roads that lead north off the A-cross road. You might explore some of those. Amanda
hunterdude Report post Posted July 5, 2006 I have a lion kill rack that I am going to take pictures of and post, but there aren't any deer in 23.
Rembrant Report post Posted July 5, 2006 Fires, lions, and poaching cowboys killed every last deer in that sorry unit. Too bad you didn't do your research before putting in. It's really too bad because a guy used to be able to hike into countless roadless areas that the unit has to offer to get away from the crowd. Like Allen said, Cherry Creek used to be good, the entire front of the Anches - facing Roosevelt Lake used to be good, and then there are lots and lots of area on top all the way to the rim that hold (I mean held) really good potential for whitetails. It used to be that a guy could bust his butt scouting and have a few different honey holes to hunt. Sure used to be good. What a shame. Mike
Couesi1 Report post Posted July 5, 2006 I'll second that, the gamies might as well sell elephant hunting tags in unit 23! You probably have just a good a chance with that tag as a deer tag! c-
bullwidgeon Report post Posted July 6, 2006 Before the tigers and bears ate them all, you could road hunt you one up off the Young road most days. Just drive real slow in the morning with the window down and barrel poked out. Too bad they all got ate, it used to be so good in there Bret M.
TwoGuns Report post Posted July 6, 2006 my folks used to live in young, and we spent a lot of time out in the woods around that area and we only ever saw one whitetail in about 8 years. my cousin works for the game and fish dept., and last year spent some time trapping elk and deer to collar in the area above the trout farm somewhere. He said he saw some really good whitetail in that area, even trapped a few. now that i think about it, I hope that is in unit 23.... anyway, next time i talk to him i will ask for better info.... Dan H Report post Posted July 7, 2006 I got pictures of 2 big horn sheep ewes in there in Jan. Found 2 nice WT Lion kills and 1 MD kill w/in a 1/4 mile apart from the sheep. Time for a new AZGFD study on droughts.
Chef Report post Posted July 7, 2006 You might want to ask Lisa (predator) over on MM. She had a 23 coues hunt this past season. (I think if I remember right) It will be a tough hunt and she had a guide too. Josh knows who she used. I was in 23 not too long ago and well, spent a lot of time in Young at "antlers"
muskeg Report post Posted July 7, 2006 Season before last I was soooo shocked that there were no Deer in unit 23 (when we hunted it during the December hunt) ..... that we plan on drawing the same tag this season just to go in there and make sure it is true ...... ...... I know I'm buying a Lion tag this time though ......
muskeg Report post Posted July 7, 2006 In fact there are so few Deer in 23 (if any at all) that they are only going to issue 50 December tags this fall. I guess they just didn't want to rip that many people off. Oh .... did I say I plan on one of those tags
