SAN CARLOS REZ update

Recommended Posts

What's up everyone! man i've been gone too long and seem all lost but i think i'm all caught up, everyone is out fishing, camping, hiking, etc i hope, family time is the best time, anyway i just thought i would give a little update on what has been happening around the San Carlos area for those who might be interested.

Fishing.....a lot has been going on with the fishing all over on the rez, some tanks doing good then not so good then good again, the San Carlos Lake is down to below 8% capacity the last time i checked, looks like we're living in the old days at Old San Carlos area, water down there is really brown and dirty but everyone still catching fish, the lake is still good fishing but for how much longer we'll have to wait and see, very steady decrease in water, Talkalai Lake is picking up a little more on the Crappie, everyone's doing good on worms and basic rubber jigs, i think too many wild apaches swimming around down there from sun up to sun down though to get much fishing in haha, i havn't been up to Seneca lately but i've heard mixed info on that place, last i heard from the rangers though is that fishing is okay but the water is a little dirty, Black River seems to be doing good, might want to stay away from the heavier traffic areas and do a little exploring! be careful not to do any Chuck Adams photo poses haha, too bad those racks had to be left there, should have stashed it and called me up, jk, a few of our stock tanks are starting to go down bigtime! Bobcat tank and Boni tank are both going to be flagged off due to many fish going belly up, too many fish and no O2, too bad too cuz those were both excellent tanks, right now the bass fishing has slowed on the tanks, trout is holding steady, and catfish is how catfish always is, very good, so if you're down for some cats then you definately should hit up some of the more untraveled tanks on the rez.

Hunting......there's been a rumor of a few tribal members spotting a very large NT bull elk around the Dry Lake area with the most impressive headgear you've ever seen! the rangers checked it out last week and took some pictures and guessed the bull to go over 500 with no problem, except for the problem that i'm just pulling your legs and i'm jk, haha, yea there's always stories of big elk and all that but we'll have to wait until SEPT and DEC to find out, hope to see some nice elk though, can't wait for the deer season though, last year was killer for coues and hoping this year will be the same, ready to start doing some scouting soon with pictures, anyone needs info give a hollar, couple of big fires up on the rez so far, first one burned downa good 1,800 acres in the Bonita Creek area, and the other one is still burning now around the Dhorn area in Unit B, some really nice whitetail country going to be rejuvinated! that fire is at 1,993.3 acres.

anyone wants any other specifics on the rez, fishing, camping, sunrise dance schedule haha, or whatever just give a hollar!

here's a pic from the Lake, tried to Chuck Adams the fish but i don't think we did a good job haha.

You boys got alot to learn about "Chuck Adams-ing" some fish. The above is a proper example. FYI Green Mountain tank, Juniper Tank and Stove tank all looked like they had had partial fish kills a few weeks ago. We caught a ton of little fish out of Bobcat but the water looked bad, maybe it will keep raining and rain harder before too long....

Dan I thought maybe one of those nice rangers might have taken you away high up into the hills since we haven't heard from you in a while :P . A couple of my buddies invited me on a fishing trip over there in a couple weeks, but I had to say no. Where are all of those big sheds, we want to see them. David

Now in effect, the San Carlos Apache Tribe has closed the following areas to everyone regarding camp fires of any type. These areas include:

The Black River Area, Wooden Crossing, Coupon Tank Area, Ten of Diamonds, Bee Flat, Anderson Flat, anything north of Point of Pine.

Area closures are due to continuing drought and thousands of acres of dead trees due to pine beetle infestation. These conditions dramatically increase the potential for wildfires to spread. This closure is for the protection of the public health, safety, and property. These areas are:

Seneca Lake, Point of Pine Lake, Dry Lake, Upper and Lower Cienega, Double Circle, Pole Corral, and Clover Tank.

Will only allow butane camping stove (no charcoal). Areas must be clear and fire breaks of at least ten feet should be established around the camp area. No smoking, except with in enclosed vehicle or building above the Nantac Rim area.

Talkalai Lake, San Carlos Lake, and the communities of Bylas, San Carlos, Peridot, Skillcenter, Cutter, and Beverly Hills are open to the public with the following restrictions:

Burn permit, No burning on RED FLAG days (windy days or extreme conditions), Burn period 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call dispatch of burning activity, Operating combustion engine with proper spark arastor.

Those exempt from this order: Any Federal, State, Tribal employees, such as Tribal resource managers, local officer, or any member of an organized rescue or firefighter force in the performance of official duty. Personal home site leases are exempt for the purpose of outdoor cooking, if an adult is present.

This order will become effective immediately and will supersede the last fire restriction issued by the tribe. The tribe thank everyone for their cooperation.
