AZwest16 Report post Posted June 22, 2012 I bought this rifle almost one year ago and up to recently have been pretty happy with it. About a month ago I went out to do some long range shooting and found out I could not group my gun at 100 yards. I had my scope taken off and re checked my Talley rings which seemed to be ok. The only thing that I found to be kind of strange was the screw located directly behind the trigger guard seems to free float and not completely tighten down. The screw isn't completely loose and is some what tight but still not tight all the way. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue and if this would be something to throw off my accuracy. Also I have been looking into new stocks and have been getting mixed reviews on whether there are after market stocks that will fit the Savage 111. I would like some feed back on some of this especially about getting a new stock to put on the gun. Thanks Regan
10Turkeys Report post Posted June 22, 2012 Azwest16, If I remember right that screw that is loose, just holds the trigger guard in place, the other two screws are what holds the stock on the barreled action. Usually when a gun is shooting good and then goes south, it is a loose screw somewhere. With a rifle that recoils, screws have a habbit of coming loose. Locktite is one option. STOMP442 Report post Posted June 25, 2012 What bullet are you shooting at 100 yards? Lots of times and especially with the long 6.5s they will not group well at 100. They require a little more time to stabilize and will generally group better at 200. As far as stocks go they are plentiful. Only thing ypu need to know is if it is center feed or staggered feed. When you take the action out of the stock and the magazine box stays in the stock it is center feed, if it stays on the action it is staggered feed. Any long action stock. 110-116 will fit just make sure you buy the correct feed type.
AZwest16 Report post Posted June 26, 2012 I'm shooting a 140 grain Berger VLD. This is the only ammo I have shot out of this rifle and up until the last two trips I had been able to get solid three shot groups at 100 yards. Since I've tried shooting at longer distances even out to 500 yards just to be sure and I am missing bad. I've narrowed it down to either my stock or VX3 Luepold scope. Hoping it is the stock. azgutpile Report post Posted June 26, 2012 Have you looked to see if your barrel has any copper fouling?
BML Report post Posted June 26, 2012 I have the same gun. My trigger guard screw did the same thing. I think it's a design flaw because once you take that screw out, it will not go back in without some sort of bondo. Easy fix, but every time you take it out, you will have to do the same thing. As far as grouping, I would first check for fouling. Copper and carbon fouling are pretty common in my rifle. I clean every 30 rounds no matter what.
STOMP442 Report post Posted June 26, 2012 Ive never been able to get the bergers to group well at 100. Check the tang and make sure it is floated as well make sure you can slip a dollar bill all the way around the rear of the action.
