excitement this PM

A yearling black bear gave my wife a bit of a thrill this afternoon when she looked our cabin's kitchen window and saw it trying to raid our bird feeders about 15 feet away. It's the first bear she has seen in our yard in Greer in the 38 years we've owned the property. I've seen just over the years, including one that stuck its nose on our French doors while I was up here alone, but I was in Springerville when today's bear showed up and I missed it. Funny thing, this was about 4:30 pm and 30-40 people were barbecuing and throwing horseshoes a couple of cabins down the road and she said that bear paid no attention to them.

Sounds pretty exciting there Bill. I bet your wife thought so anyway! Sounds like you need to buy some ''bearseed''. All kidding aside my wife feeds a bunch of quail and dove and believe it or not the rabbits eat the most of it! Pretty cool stuff.

Stuff like that is neat and definitely keeps a prominent place in memories.

I bet it startled her so she did not have a camera. That is almost always the case.

Bears are having a very tough time this year due to the drought and lack of food in the woods for them. Here in Globe, AGFD has killed several bears that wandered into town looking for food and water. One of them was a 450 lb bear with no fat on it! We recently had a kid swatted by a bear near winkleman while he was sleeping with friends near the Gila River.

I also had a bear (a smaller bear, like 100 lbs) come into my backyard this year. That was a first in my 15 years living in this house. I wonder if he smelled a deer skull I had soaking in some water in the shed in the backyard. That was where the bear was.... Or maybe he just wandered through randomly. We also have water and some birdseed in the backyard but he didn't seem interested in that. Mostly he just seemed to want to get away and out of there.

I went out this morning to one of my fav whitetail areas near Globe. Usually don't see many bears in this area until the pears ripen up. Every trail was loaded up with fresh bear crap. This area is cactus and junipers. There is one remote spring that I hiked into and I think a bear was using the spring trough as a bath tub. It was amazing the amount of bear tracks and crap in this area. There is another spring trough right near the road and the same thing there. Tracks and crap everywhere, even in the middle of the road. I think the big'ens are taking over the water holes and keeping everything else out. Also Looks like they are knocking over the yuccas and getting the fruit even though it is still green.
