Pine Donkey Report post Posted June 4, 2012 Garrett was doing a little hiking and scouting this past week. As he drove into a new area, not too far from a town, he came across a boneyard with atlease 20 bulls with their antlers cut off. I am guessing that this is the dumping ground for a taxidermist? Maybe the horns have been cut off so they can be removeable from the mount. What I don't understand is why was a ring of fur left on the skill at each base? There were also several hides that appeard to still have the front leg and shoulder on them. Maybe some of the taxidermists on here could educate me a bit...Thanks. CouesWhitetail Report post Posted June 4, 2012 Most taxidermists don't cut off the antlers from the skull like that. You might want to alert the local AGFD game warden about the dump site.

COOSEFAN Report post Posted June 4, 2012 I've seen similar areas, usually close to town and not far off highways, and the ones I've seen are dump sites for road kill. I would bet, and hope, that's what that is, or at least a dump site for a local meat processor. JIM>
Pine Donkey Report post Posted June 4, 2012 Road kill makes sense. I can not figure why a poacher would haul the kill to an area to dump it rather than take what he wants and let it lay.

The sawed off antlers is questionable. But that many bones in one spot may not indicate a poacher I guess? Road kill sounds reasonable. I have an uncle that used to live in northern Minnesota. He was a poacher, he did it for fun I guess? He would drive the remote farmfields at night with a spotlight. After shooting what he wanted, he would quick load the carcass, and head back to his farm, and hang the deer in the barn. After he was done carving off the meat, he would then dump the carcass at a remote spot in the woods. Game and Fish were on to him, and he finally gave it up. I witnessed this when I was a kid visiting them one summer. Shame on him!
JLW Report post Posted June 5, 2012 20 bulls is a lot of road kill. I spoke to 1 DPS office that had been on 78 road kill incidents in 1 year. This was in the late 90's near springerville... not sure how much area he covered but that was a lot! James
