Mormon Lake Area

Recommended Posts

So I was up by mormon lake for a week helping teach the archery Merit Badge at a scout camp for my church! I thought I would go out a couple evening and try and find some bulls! Saw plenty of elk and deer but found one impressive group of 12 bulls! Most were a 1/4 of the way done growing but one was a 6x6 probably half way done growing and looks like he will go around 360! Great trip overall helping teach the archery Merit Badge, seeing some bulls and I got to take a coyote out while glassing one evening!

We spent last week up there as well, saw no bulls but about 30 cow elk and a bear with her cub!

I have taught that merit badge a few times as well. I always hate making the string. One of my favorite scout memories was teaching the merit badge with my Dad for a week. We had a boy with some physical and mental disabilities in one of the classes. Dad worked one on one with him all 5 days and when he did his shooting requirements at the end of the week, the grin on his face was ear to ear. His Dad came and talked to us that night and told us how much the accomplishment meant to the boy. We still keep in touch with their family. Working with kids is so rewarding. Kudos to you for taking the time to get kids involved.

Vowell: We mainly saw bulls around 25 of them and probably 20 cows! Found a lot of bear scat but no bears!

Flatlander: I did the exact same thing with my dad this week Im 19 and he is 46 It was great to spend time with him and shoot our bows! As for teaches the kids it took patience at first but once they got the hang of it they were doing awesome! I know what you mean about the string lol making the arrow isnt to bad though!

Over the past 5 years, I've taught that badge to over 80 boys. Great times!! Always fun to give a boy a chance to try something, when it might be the only time in their childhood that they get to use something like that. One of my favorite badges to teach, for sure.

Kudos to all of you who teach the kids the skills of getting their merit badges. They will remember this forever and inspire some to carry on the tradition. Anytime spent in the outdoors with kids is time well spent. You were in some beautiful country and I can't wait to get up there in a few weeks for the cwt get-together at Marshal Lake. Why not come and join us this year? :)

Actually went up to marshall lake while we were up there to try and catch a few fish . Unfortunantly there almost no water! Lower lake may was completely dry! Anyway I would love to come to the get together if I can manage to take a few days off work!
