2003 HD 2500 silverado 4x4

Recommended Posts

My front bearings are history. I looked up changing them out on the internet. I think I can do this job. After I take the brake assembly apart and down to the 4 bolts holding my hub most internet says to remove hub and replace new hub. Does anyone know if the bearings come all in one with the new hub? I've changed many bearings on trailers but this is a different monster for me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

I have changed the hub out a few times on my 1995 GMC. (35's on 6 lug wheels) It is most likely the same. You need a big socket to take off the nut on the end of the short axle. The hardest part is keeping the bearing from turning while you break the nut loose. I use a big pipe wrench, the ground and the wheel lug bolts. Once that nut is removed, the brakes, four bolts and the antilock sensor. All the bearing get replaced in one piece. It is helpful to have a something to set the rotor on while you do the work because it is hanging from the brake line. I use a bucket. It is a easy job if you have the tools. It is helpful to have another ride once the truck is jacked up, I went to the parts store twice to get the right socket.

4x4 hubs are usually an integral assembly. Have to replace the whole thing. You may have to rent a hub puller if it needs some force to get it off. Its a whole lot easier if you have an air impact wrench and compressor.

Good Luck and be safe.

P.S- I am not sure how chevy is setup, but on my Dodge I had to pound out all the wheel studs to attach the new hub to the disc. It takes a little time.
