AZLance Report post Posted May 21, 2012 So I set up a tree stand for bears, and for later use on whitetail, but a Red Tail hawk made a nest in the tree next to where my stand is. Now every time I am in the stand, the hawk flys away and sits up on a ridge 150yds away. While I am in the stand the hawk continually screeches at me. Will this scare away deer or bears? missedagain Report post Posted May 22, 2012 I would think that it would bother you more than the deer, the incubation period is 30 days and another 45 days until the young leave the nest so you should be ok by deer season.
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted May 22, 2012 I don't think it will bother the deer or bears, but obviously will bother you. The young should have already hatched and will likely be out of the nest fairly soon. Could you see the young in the nest? I think within a couple weeks the young will be out and hopefully have moved away from your treestand. Once the young are further away from you, the adult will stop screaming. deercrazy Report post Posted May 22, 2012 Ive seen squirrel chatter alert deer. I would think that the animals know that the hawk is upset about something, and be on more of an alert.
AZLance Report post Posted May 23, 2012 I couldn't see any young or hear any chirping... The nest is about 10' higher than me.
Heat Report post Posted May 23, 2012 Hey Lance, The hawks will probably keep pestering you until the nestlings fledge or leave the nest. After that, the probably won't have much attachment to that particular tree until next year around nesting season. Wait till they leave and you shouldn't have much of a problem with the hawks. In the meantime, if they are squawking like that they are letting everything in the area know that there is something they don't like near their nest.
