BASS Report post Posted May 21, 2012 You don't ever realize how big those dang things are till you're standing next to one. They are like a tour bus with rotorblades. My dad and I had an Apache come through the end of Box Canyon in Florence about tree top level following the river. They were doing manuvers in the red flag zone, and these guys must have skipped out for some fun. It turned to face us, and then took off. A little unnerving to say the least! AverageJoe Report post Posted May 21, 2012 Thats a ch53 not 56. Made me have to look it up. Spent four years next to those things in the Marines. When those took off you knew it. They would hover over our barracks on sunday mornings and wake me up every time. Sometimes i had to hold stuff down from falling iff shelves. They truly are amazing close up. donniedent Report post Posted May 21, 2012 Oops yep you're right. I got my 6's and 3's mixed up. I also worked on CH-46 sea knights and got the last number confused. I worked on 4 helos. AH-1W Cobras, UH-1 Hueys, CH-46 Sea Knights and CH-53 Sea Stallions. My barracks at Pendelton was across the road from the flight line. I got to hear Cobras make hard banks right above my head al night long most nights. You don't leave a full cup of water on your end table, that's for sure. Thanks for the correction Joe. OORAH!!! I loved watching all the helos flying around all the time. Good times!! I was in one of the barracks on the little road that led up to the brig. Can't remember the name of the road but it was past where yours were on the main road headed toward mainside. I think it was the last light headed south/southeast? Been alot of years. AverageJoe Report post Posted May 22, 2012 Yeah we fished there a fewtimes but never had much luck. I think we caught a few cats if i remember right (lake by the naval hospital?) My buddy and i used to mainly fish up at lake cuyumaca near julian. It was a bit of a drive but worth it. We would catch trout and catfish all day. I always wanted to hunt the deer on camp pendleton as we would always see many out in the field.
Non-Typical Solutions Report post Posted May 22, 2012 WASHINGTON: More than a million Chinese counterfeit electronic parts are estimated to be in use in US military aircraft, according to a US Senate report released Monday saying the discovery jeopardises safety and national security. The Senate Armed Services Committee said its year-long investigation launched by Democratic chairman Carl Levin and ranking Republican John McCain uncovered 1,800 cases of bogus parts, including on the US Air Force’s largest cargo plane, special operations helicopters and Navy surveillance planes. The 112-page report “outlines how this flood of counterfeit parts, overwhelmingly from China, threatens national security, the safety of our troops and American jobs,” Levin said. “It underscores China’s failure to police the blatant market in counterfeit parts — a failure China should rectify.” The report also said the Chinese government denied visas to committee staff to travel to the Asian giant as part of the committee’s probe, with a Chinese embassy official saying the issue was sensitive and that a negative report could end up “damaging” US-China relations. While the senators laid the blame squarely on China, the report said US authorities and contract companies contributed to the vulnerabilities to the defense supply chain by not detecting the fakes, or routinely failing to report suspected counterfeiting to the military. “The failure of a single electronic part can leave a soldier, sailor, airman or Marine vulnerable at the worst possible time,” the report said. “Unfortunately, a flood of counterfeit electronic parts has made it a lot harder to prevent that from happening.” The fakes included parts in the Electromagnetic Interference Filters used in night missions and in operation of “hellfire” missiles on SH-60B Navy helicopters. The were also found in memory chips in the display systems of C-17 Globemaster III and C-130J military cargo planes, and refurbished ice detection modules on the Navy P-8A Poseidon, modified Boeing 737 aircraft incorporated with anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare capabilities. The report said the Defense Department “lacks knowledge of the scope and impact of counterfeit parts on critical defense systems,” and that the use of unvetted independent distributors for the supply of critical military parts results in unacceptable risks to national security and safety. June Report post Posted May 23, 2012 Great and interesting posts. Great way to pass the time in between the seasons. i was looking back at some of the pics I took and it seems that there were at least two of these "Monsters". One with the 04 and one with 03. I guess I figured it was the same bird everytime it came by. Was quite the experience to say the least seeing them flying so low through the mountains down south.
