coueshunter Report post Posted May 23, 2012 guys/gals: somehow we all need to get INVOLVED. Whether it is work projects, donating time, fundraising, polictics, whatever. We need to stomp out the APATHY that happens for various reasons. I am volunteering to take emails from anyone who wants to specify the types of activities they would volunteer to be involved in. I can use your email/cell phone contact info and steer you in the right direction. Thanks..............Allen Taylor.................

donniedent Report post Posted May 24, 2012 I was going off about this very subject a month ago and got a very good response. We had quite a good little movement starting. But politics happened and burned me bad. I'm taking a break from this stuff. If theres a project I can be available and help on, great! But I need a break. rthrbhntng Report post Posted May 24, 2012 Come up and spend a weekend in the cool country of the White Mountains volunteering. http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=33014 The AES also has the annual Wapiti Weekend youth camp the next weekend at AZGFD Sipe White Mountain Wildlife Area. We take 100+ kids through courses designed to introduce them to hunting, fishing, shooting and conservation. Always looking for volunteers for that camp too. By the way camp is full so we can't take anymore kids. We would love to have more youth camps if volunteers will step up and help. We have lots of kids that would like to learn about hunting and the outdoors. I wish that more people would step up and volunteer for habitat projects but my first love is for the kids. People need to get past the issues and politics and focus on the positives of teaching youth about the heritage that we enjoy. There are thousands of kids out there that would love the opportunity to learn about hunting, fishing, camping, outdoors and conservation but we don't have the volunteers to put on more camps. If you are interested in getting on a list to learn about volunteer opportunities go to www.arizonaelksociety.org and sign up for the email newsletter. When you sign up you can check the box to be on a volunteer list for info. Also you can join the AES facebook page and get info from there. There are many ways to get involved you just need to take the time. Steve
SpeedGoat Report post Posted May 25, 2012 Amanda I think it is time that the Hunter Angler Heritage Work Group (HAHWG) had it's own subforum on the best message board on the internet. What do we need to do to make that happen? DP
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted May 25, 2012 Amanda I think it is time that the Huner Angler Heritage Work Group (HAHWG) had it's own subforum on the best message board on the internet. What do we need to do to make that happen? DP I would be more than happy to create a subforum for HAHWG if the group really wanted that and would use it. Doesn't seem to me there are enough posts about it to warrant a separate subforum yet. Maybe this is something to bring up at the HAHWG meeting at the end of June. And thank you for the compliment!! EBB Report post Posted May 26, 2012 I've read this thread with great interest. The fear of Politics is a huge deterrent to many and that is sad, because the realm of political bodies is where the real decisions are made. Take the Game and Fish Commission for instance. Staff makes their reccomendations and either rubber stamps them, changes them, or does nothing at all. This is the way all Governmental bodies work. The policy decision positions are where we need to be. You can lose more rights right in your very backyard from your Town or City Council than anywhere else. What we need is more people with good old fashioned common sense in the Policy making positions. Face it, when hunting or fishing becomes unfavorable with enough voters, those activities will cease to be allowed. Most Politicians are more concerned about getting reelected than doing the right thing. My perspective has always been to keep the different interest groups away from each others rights. If we have Politicians who do this we'll all be okay in the long run. So if you're so inclined, get on a ballot and get your voice heard with your new peers. I'm not minimizing any of the organizations because for the most part they all do good work, but the battlefield is much larger than many realize. donniedent Report post Posted May 28, 2012 The best way to keep "politics" out of our end, as average joes and as conservationists, is to always keep the focus on wildlife. And... When I say politics, I mean when we are political in our approach to each other, not the stuff we all face as a hunting culture. If you have an idea or motivation to do something, always check yourself and be honest enough to say "is this for me and to make me look good or is it for wildlife?". Most of us are men and with that comes egos. We naturally want to promote ourselves and be seen by our peers as valuable. But... Sometimes that takes presidence in our motivation over what is best for wildlife. I've caught myself at times recently "padding" my own ego and I had to take a step back and check my motives. I think there are some who set a good example of this line of thought. But there are some that represent the self motivated side as well. What we as individuals can do is find those who set a good example of having the right motives and promote the heck out of them, build them up and learn from them. There's one guy on this thread I know I wish I could learn more from. Taking a constant positive approach like that will eventually weed out those who are self motivated and we can do a house cleaning of sorts. Unfortunately, in this day and age, humility doesn't always push the best leaders to the fore front so its our job as sportsmen to seek out the humble leaders and get behind them. donniedent Report post Posted May 28, 2012 And let me add this. If we want to unite as sportsmen, we need to be a strong unit. We have to have a bond other than hunting. There has to be a friendship there. Projects go a long long way in building relationships. How much easier is it to call a friend out about something compaired to a relative stanger? How much easier is it to ask a friend to check their motives? This may sound a bit cheesy but we all need to be friends here. That would do more to unite us than any HB2072 or any other common goal could do.
