sjvcon Report post Posted August 1, 2012 Most competition guns I have seen are based on 1911's. The military predominantly issues the M9 Berretta, but Special Forces (depending on branch) uses 1911's and HK USP's. Some units also use SIG Sauer (also a fine gun). I don't have anything bad to say about Glocks, but I don't own one. My HK USP will do everything a Glock will do, and when I want to shoot really accurately, I shoot a 1911 or a Revolver. That said, my go to carry is the USP or a CZ P-01, which is the NATO pistol of choice. I wouldn't let a bad Springfield color your opinion of 1911's ... anything less than a $1500 TRP from Springfield just doesn't cut it. I'm betting if you shot a Wilson, Les Baer or Ed Brown they'd play heck getting you to let go of it. Of course, those are a couple of grand ... pretty stiff. For bear ... I'd carry Bear Spray as my first line of defense. If I wanted compact, I'd carry a Ruger LCR in .357 Magnum or a S&W snubby in .357 or even .44 Mag. If I didn't care about compact, which I don't, I'd carry a .44 Mag Ruger Redhawk, which is what I carry. It has a 5.5" barrel, and I'd wager if I hit a Black Bear in the toe it would go down. Thing packs a heck of a wallop, is reliable as the day is long, and I hit what I aim at. I don't need more than 6 shots. If for some unknown reason I thought I needed more shots, I'd carry a Glock in 10MM ... that is one heck of a round in a Semi Auto. Basically a .41 Magnum "Light". And yes ... I'd choose the Glock here for reliability (but only in 10 mm) .
