Opening Weekend Reports

Recommended Posts

Elkaddict, I had the same situation as you this year. I had a couple toms gobbling with their hens on the roost in the morning. The hens went one way and the gobblers went another. I just stayed put calling, thinking that everything left the country. After about thirty minutes of calling, and waiting, a gobbler responded from the general direction of the roost. He came in and I got him. So you never know, sometimes it's best to sit still.

Congrats on your bird! Good advice, went to a new area this morning and never heard a bird! Back to the area I've been hearing them tomorrow, see what happens.

Of the 7 folks I knew had tags and were able to hunt this past weekend, thus far only 1 has filled her tag. All of them said it was tough going to just locate a bird and none of them really wanted to play. That's from two hunting central and rest hunting east portions of the state.

Not having the same luck with action where I am at. Very few toms gobbling and the ones I am hearing are shutting up shortly after hitting the ground. Hunting the same areas that typically have good action.

Spent the last morning of the first hunt trying to hear them in a howling wind. Did hear a gobble at about the time he was getting off the roost, never heard him again after that. Decided to make it a morning walking to a ridge that looked good on the map and was across the canyon that I knew had birds in. Parked at the "road closed sign" that is actually a barricade placed in the middle of the road, and walked in probably 1 1/4 miles to get to the ridge. There was as many tire tracks on that road as any of the open roads in the area. Good luck to the forest service keeping people off closed roads that don't say closed, they haven't done anything in years with the already closed roads!!

Man, I've got a tag that started today and instead of chasing birds I'm sittin' here at home :(

I did get a big ol' long bearded Goulds to gobble and strut for me out of my truck window yesterday afternoon! He was lonely and easy to fire up with my lame turkey calls using just my voice. This was near Arizpe, MX though ;) , I'm just hoping they are that stoopid on Monday when I finally get out! Good luck to all that are heading out! JIM>

Counting the minutes until I can get out of here and head north for the weekend. Only have a day and a half to get it done this year.

Windy conditions seemed to be the norm up on the Rim last weekend. Calling was virtually ineffective especially Saturday, and with the full moon it seemed to throw off the roost a bit. Will be back at 'em within the next few weekends.
