standman Report post Posted April 25, 2012 My dad and I hit San Carlos Lake this morning trying to get on some more crappie action. We were not disappointed. We caught our limits (50) by 10 am. We found them in the shallows, and they were stacked in there. We caught the fish on 1/16 oz jigheads with Black/Blue/Chartreuese and Acid Rain grubs. We caught some of the biggest male crappies that we have ever caught. I also got on video a couple blue harons that caught crappies and had them for breakfast. We have seen several do this before and they are always a good sign to watch when looking for crappies in the shallows. They'll give away a crappies location quite often. Here is the link to the video: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v84/standman/?action=view¤t=BlueHerons.mp4 In the video, of the second blue heron, check out the size of the dead catfish on the bank. He is giant. Brian

Coach Report post Posted April 25, 2012 Awesome video - I've never seen them eat crappie that big. How much do you think that cat weighed live? Looks huge! I'll be there at first light - hopefully they'll be going at least one more day!

ROMOCASADOR Report post Posted April 25, 2012 Dude I was ther this morn. I was in a green and white pontoon. Only caught 22 using minnows I have no trolling motor. Then some idiot parked next to me in a brown tundra and a nitro trailer hit my trailer and broke one of the runners. I wanted to wait for him to get off water but dad calmed me down. There was plenty of parking there he didn't have to get so close.

COOSEFAN Report post Posted April 25, 2012 That was an awesome video!! I thought it was cool when that second Heron went back into the water to wash the dirt off his dinner before trying to choke em' down! Maybe he was just getting him wet so he would slide down better? Very cool! JIM>

standman Report post Posted April 25, 2012 Thanks everyone for the comments. This is probably close to the tenth time we've seen the herons do this. Several times we actually saw them catch the fish which is pretty neat. It's amazing that they can get that wide of a fish down their throat. It was a fun trip. Thanks again. Snapshot Report post Posted April 25, 2012 Up in Montana there is some kind of Heron I see on the Madison river in the canyon below Hebgen lake. These birds are by far the best fisherman on the river. They fish with alot of patience.
