San Juan River, New Mexico 2012

Recommended Posts

This has been our 5th annual trip to the San Juan. It's one of the best trout fisheries in the United States. After working 12hrs last monday we headed out for our 8 hr drive. Got there around 7am tuesday. After a couple hours of much needed sleep we hit the river. Needless to say we slept good that night. There were 11 of us this year and a good time was had by all. The raccoons get us every year. They ate 2doz of my tortillas after I forgot to put away.:(

The weather was perfect and the turkeys were gobblin like crazy on the river. Here are a few pictures. I have got to get better of taking pictures.

Looks like a great trip.

I recognize a number of places in your pictures. By any chance did you spend any time fishing the back bowls? I really like the water back there...don't much care for the slick rocks but the fishing can be great and not as much pressure as other areas.

I think I know where you're talking about. Yes we did. They have made alot of new holes in the upper braid.

They have been improving alot of the river for better fishing. :)

Awesome fish TJ, and some great photos. The "Juan" is a great place with some super quality fish. And here you were trying to tell me you were not a good flyfisherman. ;)

I remember the last time I was there was during August. It gets that hairy moss, and slick rocks. I slipped and fell into one of the deep holes. My wife was laughing at me and said all she saw was part of a flyrod sticking out of the water. At least the weather was warm at the time. I have baptized myself in some of the best rivers in the west.

As I'm writing my wife is preparing some stockers I brought home. Here are a few pictures. These are done up with:

mushrooms slice

onions chopped

1/4 c. chopped parley

1 1/2 italian bread crumbs

pinch of sage

1/4 tsp onion powder

1/4tsp gar;ic salt

1/4 tsp celery salt

It is smelling so good as we speak.

TJ,

I am going to have to sensor this thread from my 14 year olds viewing, if he sees what you guys did up there fly fishing he is for sure going to be asking if we can go do that too.........that looks like a great trip.

He saved up money, bought his own fly pole, fly reel and buys flies every time we go anywhere they can be found.

We will be out fishing for bass and he insists on me letting him practice his fly casting......the little 14' boat rocking back and forth as he whips line past my ear.......

Someday maybe we can get together so he can actually learn what the heck is going on with that fly fishing..............thanks for sharing your pictures and story.......

The back bowls is the stretch of water along the far bank above texas hole.

Nice to hear they are working on some imporvements. The last time I was there was after a number of the side canyons blew out and really silted up the river. Traditional hot spots weren't very good and the hatches had really been negatively impacted.
