Dodge truck steering problems

Responding to a couple of comments here,

 

To BML, I agree, I think caster adjustment is a good inexpensive way to solve the problem. I am replacing parts that I actually see wear to. I plan on having this truck a while and want it to be in top shape. I plan on having the caster adjusted to the max next week. What 4 wheel shop did you use for your alignment?

 

To jwdodge01, I have checked the ball joints and they seem to be good. The two places I've had the truck to agree and say they are fine. I know they wear out on these trucks pretty fast since I had to change them at 30000 miles on my last Dodge. When I do replace them in the near future I will be buying good quality joints, not the OEM ones for sure.

 

To Snapshot, I am going to Montana to check on my house and to relax for a few days. 6 years ago we bought 20 acres of lakefront property by Trout Creek, Montana. took me 5 years to get a house built on it. (1245 miles from here) We are 20 miles from the Idaho border on the highway going to Sandpoint, Idaho. The lake we are on is Noxon Resevoir, 24 miles long and the premier bass lake in Montana. Many professional bass tournaments are held on this lake. My wife and I will be up there from June 23rd thru July 10th. If it so happens that you are going to be up there at that time let me know, maybe we can get together and cook some steaks and have a couple of cold ones one night. Nice to have guests.

I have spent the last two summers living and working in the West Yellowstone area. It is an awesome place for sure. Flyfishing paradise! I have heard of Noxon, but have never been there.

 

If I do go up, it will be mid May. I am currently in negotiation with a company, but have not formally excepted the offer yet.

I spent a couple of years guiding out of Noxon MT. The Trout Creek bar has gotten a few of my dollars (closest place to Noxon that has more then 200 people besides Sand Point or Kalispell). I love it up there! they have some awesome fishing in the Resevoir. I might be headed back up there to guide again this year.

It always amazes me how many people I talk to that used to live in or know this area well. Noxon and Trout Creek are such small towns, but a lot of folks have been there. I too have spent a few dollars in the Trout Creek bar. Nice place to have a burger and a cold one and look out over the lake. I usually manage to make 4 trips up there a year. Normally I drive it 3 times and fly once.

 

Some of the hunts are open in October up there. If you end up guiding up there this year look me up. I usually make a trip in late October. Let me know, maybe I will be there. My place is almost exactly between Trout Creek and Noxon. I can see the train trestle over Swamp Creek Bay from my house.

A few thoughts.......

 

#1 Check for open Recalls on the truck issued by Chrysler.

 

#2 Are your tires load range "E"? (extremely important with the diesel)

 

#3 Check Ball joints. Don't mess with the camber/caster. Leave it stock. The leveling kit does not affect this either.

 

#4 Get a very accurate allignment done.

Spent today replacing ball joints on my Ram. I ONLY GOT ONE SIDE DONE. What a pain. Thank goodness my brother in law has a 20 ton press in his garage. The ball joint tool I rented at Autozone doesn't work on Dodge 4x4's.

 

If you have never worked on ball joints on a Dodge 4x4, you are missing out on a wonderful experience :blink:

I've had all kinds of different dodges. diesel hemi the old 360 3/4 and 1/2 ton lifted and not. all good trucks with no problems. i just got rid of my pos f250 and got an 06 power wagon. my only complaint is how rough the ride is. has anyone had any luck going with different springs?

Call Carli or Thuren suspension or check out their websites... Amazing what their stuff will do for the ride of your truck. I've got a full Carli/Thuren hybrid 2.5" King kit and it rides like a dream.

Took me about 13 hours to replace ball joints and steering linkage (tie rods). It really tightened up the old clunker. Still need to do a new trac bar and control arm bushings. Got to get it in for an alignment.

Then we'd have to replace turbos, injectors, sensors, and driveshafts... Regularly. Hahaha... I'll stick wih my Dodge! :D

Dodge has always had an issue with front end problems since 89 when they first put a CTD in the 3/4, 1 ton trucks. Having the two inch leveling kit is flexing your track bar, with out a track bar drop. Also your pitman arm is too short with the 2 inch leveling kit. If your going to level it get the whole kit with the spacers, sway bar extensions, track bar drop bracket,longer pitman arm, shocks the whole deal with the mini liftkit. ;)

Weak links on the dodge are the front end, and you add an aftermarket lift pump to feed the cummins you can bulletproof your cummins.

 

Best Truck in the world would be Ford+Cummins in front of an allison.

More than 80 % of the time the "Death Wobble" is caused when the cummins torque monster twists the frame which causes the rails to flex and fatigue. Luckily recently my friend found a fix to this with the Dodge Steering Stabilizer that has completely brought back the steering stability of his truck. So give this fix a try first before you go and spend hundreds of dollars on getting your front end looked at with the end result of driving away and still having the death wobble. Anyway i would would some research and price checks from different companies because there are a lot of different people that make these now. Best of luck !
