AZGF what are you thinking?

Recommended Posts

If I read the recommendations right, AZGF wants to close the late archery hunt in 34A. They say there is a 50% success rate overall for archers during the late hunt. THEN they increase 50 tags for the general hunts and decrease the muzz. hunts by 25. Increasing the overall load on the unit seems to contradict their statement us archers are overly successful in the late hunt. You can't make a statement needing to close a hunt then increase tags for other hunts in the same unit. The numbers don't lie. If the unit can't sustain the total number of animals harvested, then why increase the number of tags in said unit. I guess they are counting on the decrease in KIA during the late hunt to offset the total numbers. It just looks bad when they do things like this. Decrease the days not the whole hunt.

The hunt guidelines call for only a certain percentage of the harvest to be taken by archers. I think 20. If this is exceeded the first thing they do is eliminate the dec hunt, then half of jan hunt, then make it a draw hunt.

What I saw was the Dec. and Jan hunts cancelled.

I agree it doesn't make much sense in general (at least to me...) to increase general hunt numbers in 34A while at the same time eliminating the December archery hunt. (I actually re-read it to make sure...only the December archery is cancelled. January still open in 34A)

Although it does state that the archery change is based on 50% of mule deer harvest in 34A being archery...not whitetail. And the general hunt increase is on whitetail. The general hunt for mule deer in 34A is unchanged (only 25 tags).

Bradley: If you look at page 14 you will see the hunt dates and units. Look at the Dec 14,2012 to Jan 31,2013 UNIT 34A is not in the group of open units. This is what I am referencing. They might have stated in the language only the Dec hunt would be canceled but the reg. page includes Jan 2013.

ARCHERY HAVE TO REPORT THERE KILLS. BUT RIFLE HUNTERS DO NOT? How can they compare mandatory stats to volunteer stats???? They are trying to do the same thing in Unit 29. They say that during the archery season of 2010 only 260 archers hunted in 29 and they harvested 63 Coues and or mule deer. That makes the harvest percent 24%. During the rifle hunts they had six different hunts and the percentages on those hunts are as follows, 28%, 27%, 27%, 19%, 13%, 29%. Now keep in mind that rifle hunters do not have to report their kills. That means those rifle percentages are not accurate, and could only be increased if there reporting was mandatory.

That's a good point, i think it should be mandatory if you kill or not. If you don't submit you lose all your points and don't get drawn for year or two.

As I stated above the wording states that Jan. 1 to 31 2013 is open on page 3 but when you look on page 13 it isn't there. they are conflicting themselves. WHICH ONE IS ACCURATE?????

I think you mean page 14. Look at the hunt with the date range of Jan. 1 to Jan. 31, unit 34A is listed. You won't find it in the hunt that runs Dec. 14 - Jan. 31.

the amount of archers hunting the unit was 260? So all the people that archery hunted and did not kill a deer turned in there survey card from that unit? I highly doubt it!

I agree mandatory reporting would be good and make the phantom #s make more sense.
