Hunting for Monsters!

Recommended Posts

Been stuck at home and sicker than a dog last couple days with "cabin fever" settin in bad enough that I grabbed the camera and went looking for Monsters!

It didn't take long to find one and proceeded to play "ring around the rosie" with him around a creosote bush. He was more aggressive than the pics appear, I just couldn't snap a photo at the right time with his tongue out or his mouth open. He was hissing and seriously tired of me following him around. He did give me some good poses for the camera though and eventually I left him alone. I did find a rattlesnake but he made it into a badger hole before I could get the camera out. The nasty critters are out, everyone should be mindful while in the outdoors now! JIM>

nice, I've run on to them a few times over the years.

want to get the snake out of the hole, run a stick down it, or a piece of wire. We used to use our lariats, stick it down the hole and wiggle, then step back because the snake was usually right behind and PO'd when we pulled the rope out.

If anyone wants a good chance at finding a Gila Monster, right now is the time to do it. Early spring time, before it gets too hot during the day, just head to Powers or Robbins Butte Wildlife Areas and hike around! For me, it's really close to my house, and I'm not happy unless i'm in the outdoors, so I've spent quite a bit of time out there in the off seasons ;)

Good pictures Jim. Thanks for sharing with us who don't get out as often as you. They are neat looking. :)

Nice Pics. I used to have one living on my property for awhile. Saw it every spring for about 3 years. I got real close to get pics, and he didn't like it much. Gave me an evil hiss! They are pretty strong!

I have only seen a couple of those in my life, both down by Gila Bend. Some of the best pictures I've ever seen of a Gila Monster!!
