bullwidgeon Report post Posted February 24, 2004 The worm turned and the hogs came out and about for the end of HAM season. There were still some deer around and this little guy busted me watching him feed first thing in the morning. He busted me as a I dug the camera out of my pack. I was glad he hung around for a picture or two. Later on my grandfather glassed up a big herd of pigs and we snuck right in on them. He got this one and scared the crud out of the others and I got none. Oh well, packing out one hog was enough for me this year . Yesterday I helped my buddy's girlfriend get her first hog on the rifle hunt. It is nice to see someone suceed in "big" game hunting on their first try. She was a trooper, we had to chase the hogs up over a mountain and through some shoots before she got the job done. I am sure glad with cliffs like where this one finally expired I was along as designated Hog glasser and Photographer. I enjoyed watching my buddy be the deisignated hog Gutter and Packer and yes the truck was parked way out there in those mesquite flats in the backround. I hope everyone else had as much fun as I did this hog season. Bret M.
CHD Report post Posted February 24, 2004 Hey Bret, Great pics and great story! Glad you had a blast. Thanks for reminding me of the beautiful Arizona desert country. Congrats on finding and enjoying a great, productive, positive hobby! Most people don't ever get the hobby thing figured out, and it is their loss. CouesWhitetail Report post Posted February 24, 2004 (edited) Great photos and story bullwidgeon. Thanks for posting it!! What fun. I had fun pig hunting although I didn't get a javelina. I stalked one herd and got within about 10 yards of the lead javelina. The problem was it was so thick there was no real good shooting lane. So I had to move around a bush. I waited for that pig to have its head behind a bush and I made it almost perfectly, but at the last step another pig came out from behind the one I was gonna get and busted me. The pig I was gonna shoot just stayed there behind the bush for a little while. All it had to do was step forward, but no, it reversed and went out where the other pig went. Well, I don't feel too bad about it since there were only 4 javelina in that herd and I feel guilty when the herd is so darn small. I had fun glassing up lots of WT. And the place I hunted in 36C had so many jackrabbits it was unbelievable. I glassed up about as many jackrabbits as deer. Here is a picture of one jackrabbit with a group of deer. i just had to take the photo, it cracked me up how the rabbit ran over to the deer. And here is a group of three jackrabbits that were on the opposite side of the ridge. I heard only a few coyotes and never glassed one up. Kinda suprised me given all the rabbits everywhere. I already posted my buck photos in another thread. I had a hard time on my javelina hunt trying to ignore all the deer. The area was really dry with very little greenup of anything. The deer were mostly eating cholla and mesquite. I still don't know how they eat cholla without getting stabbed. I guess they just have no choice. But I watch them and they gingerly pick away at the fruit (which was still green) and seem not to even notice all the spines. Pretty amazing given how sensitive their mouths are. Thanks again for the story and photos bullwidgeon! Amanda Edited January 1, 1970 by CouesWhitetail
COUESAZ Report post Posted February 24, 2004 (edited) Well Amanda it looks like the rut is in full swing in 36C . For jackalope that is, ha ha ha. Nice pictures as always. You to bullwidgeon. Edited January 1, 1970 by ARIZONA GUIDE
bullwidgeon Report post Posted February 24, 2004 Ahh yes, deer in the cholla, they love eating that cane cholla in 33. I swear that rabbit looks to be half the size of that deer. Nice pics and story Amanda!!! I find it hard to focus on locating hogs when deer are everywhere. The first 2 days of the HAM hunt in 33 produced 21 different deer and 5 bucks, 2 deer that were nice bucks in the mid nineties before I even saw a hog. Finally one herd of 20 or so pigs appeared right before dark on the second day, but I missed a long shot at the only hog in the open. Sometimes I swear they just want you to play tag with them and wade through the brush to see how close you can get before they bolt to the next mesquite tree or catclaw patch. My buddies girlfriend had a 37A rifle tag and other than one really big desert muley that I only got fleeting glimpses of and a desert tortoise all I saw were hogs. Maybe I will have to start hunting pigs in units with no or very few coues deer, it might make it easier to focus Bret M.

peckl1 Report post Posted February 29, 2004 My brother, nephew and I tried to do a little pig hunting in 36a this year. Not much luck on seeing pigs. We saw pigs on just 1 day. They were too far and running too fast for a shot. 1 day for a change we decided to sit down and use this j-13 call a bought. I'm a sucker for things like that. You shoud see my tackle boxes...... Anyway, we came across some fresh javelina sign and decided to try and call them in. We settledd down in Penitas wash. I called for about 45 minutes, no luck. We moved down the wash about 150 yards and called for another 45 minutes. still no luck. We moved down the wash about 100 yards and started to call again. My nephew is about 15 yards to my right. My brother is another 10 yards past him. My nephew says " I see a mountain lion. No I see 2 mountain lions" I said "Are you sure they are not bobcats?" While this conversation is going on my brother moves over to my nephew and sees they are indeed mountain lions. He says "You have a permit for mountain lion so SHOOT!!!" My nephew shot and brought down 1 of the lions. It was a tom about 95 lbs dressed. My brother could not get a shot off on the other lion. I was still in shock that I brought in 2 lions with this javelina call. My nephew is 17 and this was his first big game hunt. Those lions got to within 20 yards of him. I have taken him out for quail and dove before. Needless to say he is the envy of his friends right now. We also found a very large mule deer skull and rack from a lion kill in the same wash. I've got some pictures but I don't know how to post them.

CHD Report post Posted March 4, 2004 (edited) For the second time, what's up with all the gd lions in Arizona??? Holy cow, that's it for me. I have had more than enough. Never again will I waste my mental and physical energy and $$$ pursuing magnificient and challenging Coues deer bucks. There probably aren't any left, anyway. My hunting license $$$ seem to be going to the anti's who absolutely love a healthy lion pop. From now on, I will chase the most plentiful, most respected, and most visible big game animal in Arizona, the mountain lion. I have been wrong all these years thinking that mature Coues bucks are the epitome of big game in Arizona. My mistake, I apologize. LOL, Chris Edited January 1, 1970 by CHD
More D Report post Posted March 4, 2004 Just wanted to add a note about the jackrabbits. On the King Anvil it looks like they hunt the coyotes, at the house just as you leave the ranch the one with the screen room you could see they had the pelts drying. At one time we counted something like 11. Once while we were signing out we even saw them skinning one. My hunting partner and I spend a lot of time in the King Anvil this season and I only remember seeing 5 coyotes and TOO MANY JACKRABBITS. We even used them as target practice but it only took loseing one $12.00 arrow to see that was a bad idea. It is a shame that it gets closed down for the summer jacks, lions, and shed hunting would make the summer shorter.
