Southwest Sportsmen's Alliance

Recommended Posts

About 3 years ago a group of desert hunters got together and decided to try and do something about the declining mule deer numbers in the central deserts. The idea was to form an new org that would cover areas that were not receiving the attention it deserved. With the lack of interest being what it was the idea was abandoned.

Fast forward to about a month ago.

The same group of guys plus some more motivated individuals had a meeting with representatives from game and fish, Yuma Valley Rod and Gun Club and AES to discuss the amlarming decline in mule deer numbers in the northern part of region 4. The meeting was very fruitful and educational. A decision was then made to start the process of creating a new organization. The desire was there to create an org that would truly represent the average hunter. Southwest Sportsmens Alliance was born.

We are now in the process of obtaining our 501c3 status. We are currently planning water catchment projects, predator control plans, youth camps and building a great working relationship with Game and Fish. We are currently in a position that we don't want to move forward without full participation from the sportsmen this group will represent. We want to hear from you. There is a poll you can participate in that I will post a link to. If you have ANY questions please feel free to ask. This started out as an org that would concentrate on desert mule deer and desert bighorn sheep but we are rapidly realizing that there are individuals all over the state that want to be involved. Please take the time and check out the poll and ask any questions you would like. Here is the link:

So let me get this straight, 62 views and nobody is even a little interested? Did I mention that we will have voting membership? Yeah, we aren't going to mail you a survey, we're going to mail you a ballot. One member, one vote. Oh and our board... 1 member, 1 vote. We're discussing a possible 2-3 year term limit on board members. We're also discussing that if you are one another board you cannot be on ours. This is going to be something totally new. This is nothing against those other great orgs out there with guts, we just want to try something different, something new. We want the average sportsmen to finally, finally have a voice.

Hey all. I am a part of this new group and i can tell you we will start doing all we can for region 4. We believe that there are a lot of things that can be done to help our desert deer and our Bighorn Sheep in all of the region 4 units.

We would really like to have you in our group and if you have any questions about it you can email me personally and i will answer any questions you may have.

We are still in the paperwork stage right now but we are getting with Pat Barber and Dave Conrad and Craig heath and finding ways to help them RIGHT NOW! I know Craig needs some repairs on his tanks and so does Dave Conrad.

Did you know there was a program called "Adopt a Waterhole" that the game and fish has? I introduce this to them over 6 years ago and it is being used but not as much as it needs to be--this is something this group will use and use extensively!

We will start with the easy wins and move to the not so easy ones as our group grows but we want as many of you as we can to get involved and help our desert deer herds and our Bighorns Sheep herds.

Jbeee,

There is a link posted above for a roll call poll we are doing. We will be posting updates here as well to let everyone know our progress. Let us know any and all ideas you may have. We are looking for any and all input people may have. In the short time we have been working on this we have had some new and innovative ideas come up about a different way to support the department and help the wildlife. Thanks for stepping up and a big thanks!

Is this the same organization Terry Herdon spoke of last night?

Just waiting on an admin over there to approve my registration. Once that happens, I'll add to the poll.

We're at 36 and counting on our poll folks. Just as a side note, there is a catchment project coming up on April 28th on the 442 catchments. If anyone is interested I can post details.

I think regional chapters would garner a lot of membership. I for one love the idea and want to focus on being in an org that focuses on conservation and it's members.

Letting the members speak through polls or letters is better than paying out lots of money to a greedy parasite to sway politicians. That being said driving to Phoenix or wherever is not an option these days for meetings etc. I think more people would do this if meetings etc were held closer to their home .

Just my .02

I am completely sold on the idea of chapters. I think, as far as I can tell so far we have quite a few folks up there that want to be involved.

But first things first. There are certain things we have to do to get this off the ground and we NEED your input. We are planning a get together bbq for the purpose of laying the rest oof the groundwork. We are trying to plan it so that anyone in the state that wants to be involved can come and give input. We will keep everyone posted.
