Bonus Point Question

Recommended Posts

If anyone knows, I have a bonus point question. I killed an archery deer in January. I know that I can't put in for deer, but can I still buy a bonus point to keep my loyalty point? I have called the game and fish on this and nobody knows for sure the answer.

When they came up with the loyalty bonus point I wondered the same thing. If you find out let us know.

The way I understand it you can apply for the bonus point. Before the "bonus point" only option was available people would apply for a strip tag just to get a bonus point. There is no law against have two deer tags, you can only shoot one per year. So, IMO you could apply and draw a tag but you could not hunt if you did. Does that make sense?

I think you can if there is a bonus point hunt number because you are not applying for a tag to hunt a second deer for the year you are applying for a bonus point only.

I THINK?!??

I would agree with Muley62 on this one, I would also call azgfd again and get an answer, then get the name of the person that gives it, there is the bonus point only hunt number and that would probably be the best way to go. Good Luck on finding out.

Here's the way it reads on Page 54 - 2005-2006 Regs

Section: R 12-4-107 - Bonus Point System

K. The following provisions apply to the loyalty bonus point progam:

1.The department shall award a loyalty bonus point if an applicant applies for a hunt-permit tag for a specific genus consecutively for a five-year period, and purchases a hunting or combo license for each of the 5 consecutive years.

2.An applicant retains a loyalty bonus point once accrued as long as the applicant applies annually for a hunt permit-tag for the genus for which the loyalty bonus was accrued.

3.IF an applicant who has accrued a loyalty bonus point fails to apply in any calendar year for a hunt-permit tag for the genus for which the loyalty bonus point was accrued, the applicant's loyalty bonus point for that genus is forfeited.

4.For the purpose of the loyalty bonus point program, year one of the calculation of consecutive years is 2001, and the department shall award a loyalty bonus point on or after the effective date of this section.

5. A loyalty bonus point is accrued in addition to all other bonus points.

- I believe that you're ok - but still "open" to some interpretation.

It is amazing though that with all the buerocracy that they missed a clear answer.

Seems like I saw something along the lines of what More D posted. Maybe that was another state?

Yes you can still apply. Make sure that you apply for the bonus point only, you don't want to draw a tag and not be able to hunt it. I'm not G&F but I work with them and asked that same question.

Thanks everyone for your responses. It's amazing how much of a runaround i got from the G&F today. It looks like applying for a bonus point is ok. I wouldn't have put in for a tag just to keep a loyalty point. I've got my deer for the year, I wouldn't want to take someone else's tag. Bonus points what a mess :P . I hate the dang things. Thanks again .

Since we are asking this sort of question, can anyone apply for the fall javelina tags if they didn't tag out this spring, but had drawn a tag, maybe they should have thought more about this. Maybe they don't care who applies for the fall javelina tags because the more that apply the more application fees they get to keep.

I might have to call tomorrow.

Good question, I think you would still be able to apply and draw the tag and under 1 animal per calender year bag limit you would still be ok. I don't know if drawing the tag makes a difference but many of us have two tags for tha same species in a given year, like an archery and general deer tags, turkey, bear, etc. Let us know what you find out.
