What is your Coues deer set up?

Recommended Posts

My Coues/Pronghorn rifle is a Weatherby Ultra Lightweight in .25-06, firing 100 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips at about 3,300 fps. Scope is a Leupold 4.5x14 AO with heavy duplex reticle in the FANTASTIC Dave Talley rings and bases. Rifle weighs 5.75 pounds with a 24" barrel and shoots sub-MOA groups consistently.

My big glasses are Leica 10-15x Duovids. I use the Leica bino mount (that comes with the duovids) on the Outdoorsmans tripod with the pistol grip head.

My handhelds are Leica Ultravids in 8x50.

This is a cool thread B) . I have yet to use my 7mm Rum for the job I got it for. I practiced out to 600 yards and I shot my last buck at 75 yards. :P Thank goodness for long range coyote practice! I forgot about my Bushnell 800 range finder.

Basic stuff for another mortgaged hunter with more month leftover at the end of the money... :P

Remington 700 BDL 300 win mag, 3-9x50 VXII with harris bipod and usually carrying 10x42 meade safari pro binos with a solid generic tripod. Also a 10-50x60 spotter on occasion. Have a couple rangefinders that are a bit large for packing so will probably be updating that soon.

I always worry if I carried top notch equipment it might get too easy? B)

My eyes are gettin older now so I may upgrade sooner than later!

When ever I actually get drawn for coues deer, I shoot a plain jane Rem 700 243 win with hornady light mag 95 gr ssts. I have a 4-12 leupold scope and a harris bipod on it. Might put a better stock on it and do some trigger work with it. My number one weapon I use for everything though is My Bowtech Pro 40 dually. It zips my easton axis and magnus buzzcuts fast and accurately. My glasses are cabelas 20-80 astronomicals and I carry bushnell trophy 10-42 around my neck Daniel

DBarcher, triggers on remingtons are super easy, i was shown one time how to do it by RedRabbit, and i have done about 3-4 more since then.

what bullet is everyone shooting? right now, i am shooting 140 accubonds from my 270 wsm and 270 winnie. my dads 7RUM also likes 140 accubonds. i am working up a load for my 7mag with 120 TSX. for the 270 AI, i will work up a 130 TSX load, or maybe go with interbonds, they shot well out of my 270wsm

7 is a pritty good score for a set of 20's. I would love to check out a pair for myself. Does anyone else have anything to say about the 20x80's. Does anyone have a pair in or arround Flagstaff.

DBArcher- how much do they weigh?

Lance, have you let the air out of anything with your 7RUM? if so, how did the remington factory rounds perform? my dads 7RUM with hand loaded 140 accubonds went through a whole coues deer! about 150 yard shot, came in the left butt cheek, traveled all through the body and exited right infront of the shoulder, 50 cent piece sized whole.

OH MAN! One coues deer, one badger, several coyotes and a fue jack rabits. Oh man, if the bullet hits any type of resistance, then things will BLOW UP! There is no nice way to say or describe it.

Did your dads bullet hit any big bones? Ever see a coyotes head disapear? yes disapear, compleatly. It's a site to ponder on I tell you what. I hit my coues right up the center hole. I guess the presure was to much and had to excape out somewhere. So it came back out the same way. I used a nife to get out the heart and lungs and that was all that was left in there. We will leave out the badger and the jacks. Does that cover your question. the 7mm RUM and the 300 RUM are the fastest things out there past 400 yards.

If you cannot find a set to try out in Flag, Cabelas is supposed to be opening around August in Glendale so get ready to make the drive. I was chatting with a few Cabelas people a few weeks back and sounded like it is on schedule.

I drive by it on the 101 Loop and it is taken shape.

Ruger M77 stainless/laminated stock in .300 win mag, leupold 3.5-10x50 VIII w/bipod. This rifle loves the Federal Classic 150gr, the accuracy is amazing and I would love to take a 500yd shot at a Coues someday(if the conditions are right) B)

Leica 10x32 trinovids, Brunton 15x51 atop a Nikon tripod. Just bought the Eberelstock J-1 last year and love it, I can put waayyy too much crap in there! I also carry a three legged fold up stool to sit on when I glass, my back can't handle sitt'n on the ground.

Bowtech Allegience, PSE radial weave 28 1/2" w/ Rocky mtn Snypers. This bow is spitt'n arrows out there at 312fps and is easy for me too shoot. I whacked a stink pig with it this year and hope to add an Elk and a Antelope to the list this year as well.

One of the most important things I do to make my Coues hunts enjoyable and productive is exercise and allot of it. Everyday I will run anywhere from 2 1/2 to 5 miles and upper body strength training as well, may not be priority for you younger fellers but someday you will know what I am talking about. :P

Hey Tines, if you wanna check out the Eberelstock pack give me a holler.

azpackhorse,

Thanks, Brian. Actually, just before you posted this, I just finished my order of a Badlands 2200. In reality, I would still be using my old pack but I got a gift certificate to Cabelas. They didn't carry Eberelstock. Thanks again for the info, guys. I'm sure I'll be happy with my choice. I'll have to go down to Sportsman's and see what I'm missing out on.

the 140 accubond from my dads RUM hit the left rear leg bone, smashed it and continued on through with controlled expansion. now, on the other hand, when he shot the buck again at 20 yards, it blew the heck out of the lungs and spine.
