Lance Report post Posted May 3, 2006 Ok guys lets hear what your set up is? I am constantly upgrading my set up, its a slow process with 4 kids and a mortgage. Right now I am using a 7MM RUM with a 26" stainless steel barrell and a synthetic stock. Shooting a 140gr factory soft point. It is topped with a Burris Full Field 2 with the Balistiplex crosshairs. I am using 10x45 Minox binos and a Nicon 15x45 x60 spotter on a Slick tripod. The next thing I will upgrade is the tripod. What are you using?
Red Rabbit Report post Posted May 3, 2006 A Win 70 Supergrade is at the smith getting accurized and rebarreled with a Pac-Nor in 6.5 WSM. Scopes are 3.5-10 w/ turrets. Binos are Leica 10x50, and Minox 15's, but am considering consolidating and saving weight with a pair of Leica 10+15 Duovids, inspite of their smaller field of view. Velbon Chaser EFL-4 and Slik Sprint mini tripods. Stoney Point tripod for shooting. Leica 1200 rangefinder. Blacks Creek/Jim Horn Alaskan daypack for all the "stuff" But the nicest thing is the foam sitting pad. RR

bullwidgeon Report post Posted May 3, 2006 Weatherby Mark V Synthetic in .300 Weatherby. 4-14 Burris II with Ballistic Plex. A heavy Bogen tripod. 10x42 Leica BN's for around he neck and 15x56 Swaros in my pack. No spotting scope. If I can't see 'em and tell what they are with my current glass, then they aren't big enough. COOSEFAN Report post Posted May 3, 2006 I've been using a Win. model 70 .270 classic featherweight, with 130gr Nosler ballistic tips. I have the VXIII 4.5-14x40mm w/ B+C reticle and love the set-up. I use and love the Outdoorsman's tripod especially with the Jim White pan-head on top. I carry EL 8.5x42's on me and SLC 15x56's in the pack, I don't leave home without em'! I also have the Swaro 20-60x80HD scope and love it, but hate carrying it!!!! I have the case and strap for it and is fine by itself but not with two other optics, tripod and everything else! I try to get someone to go with so they can carry it The spotter is overboard because like has been said, I can tell if it's big enough through my 15's, but with picky hunters, you need a better look before making them cross a canyon. I also use and swear by the Leica rangefinder and my Badlands 2200 pack. My goal for this year is to find a glassing pad with a backrest of some sort. I heard REI had one that works good and light, anyone seen it? To be able to sit behind your optics comfortably for hours would definitely increase success. If you plan on using a tripod ALOT, I would pay the money for the Outdoorsman with the Jim White head. If not, Bushnell has one that is awesome for around $200.00 at the Warehouse. My Bro-n-law bought one and took the Bushnell stickers off and you would think he paid alot more for it, really nice tripod though, light and sturdy. Tines Report post Posted May 3, 2006 .338 Win Mag Remington Model 700, ADL Synthetic, stainless, medium Shilen barrel, with the works. Currently I'm shooting a 225 grain partition style bullet. I'll be with a little lighter ballistic tip by this fall, I think. It's topped off with a Leupold 6.5-20x40mm and target turrets. I've done well finding the little boogers with my Swarovski 10x42's, Bogen tripod, Outdoorsman's QD Tripod mount and their pistol grip. Still working on those 15's! I have the Leica LRF 900 to reach out and touch 'em. Lance, I'd suggest a muzzle-break for that canon before a tripod! : )
More D Report post Posted May 3, 2006 My list is gonna be short compared to the rest of you guys. My rifle(my baby!) is a bone stock model 70 in 30-06, black 26inch barrel, synthetic stock, Nikon 3-9x40 buckmaster series. It only seems to like 150gr bullets so when I have time I reload to shrink the groups but it is hard to justify when it will shoot under MOA with $11.00 a box Remington Cor-locks. Binos are Pentex 10x42 HR2's and a Leica 900LRF. My hunting/scout pack I couldn't make it again if I had to, it started out about four years ago and have added to it or modified it just about each time I put it on. I think I finally got it down now though. I am in the same boat as Lance, it is hard to upgrade with all that is going on. Although my wife has tried two different times to get me a new rifle but that is the last thing I would change. It just has a special place in my heart. It's a little rough and has it's fair share of scraches but it shoots better than I do. As for changes....?? I would love to have a trigger job done this summer and I will finally change out that chunk radial tire for a recoil pad for a Limb Savers one. My wife has one on her rifle and it's like BUTTER! Kevin Report post Posted May 3, 2006 I shoot a stock (other than trigger) Ruger M77 300 Win mag with 150 grain nosler partition reloads. The rifle is wood stocked and blued, just like it was the day my wife gave it to me for my graduation from graduate shcool! Its topped off with a Leupold 3-9 currently but may upgrade this year to something with a little more magnification. I carry 10X42 SLC around my neck and 15's SLC in a Badlands 2800. My most important upgrade will be to a new tripod as the one I have is not sturdy enough for the 15's. Kevin
Red Rabbit Report post Posted May 3, 2006 Jim, Are you refering to the Crazy Creek classic chair. It weighs 23 oz and rolls/folds up to tie to the pack. THe stadium seat has thicker padding and is too stiff to roll or fold, and thus is bulky. Got em both. I tried inflatable seat pads, but two suffered from deflation syndrone. http://www.crazycreek.com/interior.cfm?page=detail&item=28 Doug~RR
billrquimby Report post Posted May 3, 2006 A 7 mm Rem. Mag on a Mauser 98 action, with Timney trigger, Shilen barrel, and 3x9X Leupold scope. I stocked it myself using walnut cut on a friend's ranch in Texas. I carry 10x50 Swarovskis. When driving and glassing, such as for antelope, I use a 20X Zeiss spotting scope. I've taken everything from 10-pound grysbok in Zambia to big Alaska-Yukon moose in Canada, in addition to most of my Arizona Big Ten with it. It works. Lance Report post Posted May 3, 2006 Awesome guys! I forgot to mention that my 7mm RUM was a Rem 700. I have been using comfy camp chairs while glassing from near my truck and have been packing a fome hunting pad to sit on while on hikes. I am gitting too many miles on my body to sit on the ground any more. This season I will be packing a tripod stool of some kind! I have been using an X-Large Cabelas Bow/Rifle Pack. I like it but after 4 hard and abusive years the zippers are starting to have truble. I will get a pair of 15's some day but I will always carry my spotting scope. Although I might upgrade the power of my scope from 45 to 60. I love to use 15's to glass with, but when ever a buck is spoted, everyone leaves their 15's to come look through my spotter. Tines If I put a muzzle break on my gun, then no one will ever hunt with me. The area arround me will look like that jack rabit you shot with it! ie..BOOM! Oh well at least I think I need it all? matthewp45, How do you like that Badlands 2200? I'm really considering the pack. The pack I use now is terrible. I hate having to dig through the bottom to get something out. I'm looking for a well-built, well-designed (something with pockets and organization) and real comfortable. There are some I've found that work well for organization but the quality doesn't compare to the Badlands. I HATE how everything falls to the bottom of my pack! Let me know what you all think. Lance, Anytime you shoot a jackrabbit and in turn you find MANY jackrabbits within a 10 yard radius where the impact took place, it's too much of a gun! coueshunter Report post Posted May 3, 2006 .257 weatherby mag with 115 ballistic tips. 10x42 & 15x56 SLC's tripod that I have found the most durable is the Velbon EFL4. I switched packs to the ebberstock gunslinger and it fits all my junk in better than the badlands 2200 and has better compartments to carry the tripod/bino's etc. One of the best pieces of gear I carry is a good butt pad........LOL........cant glass long periods of time effectively if you are uncomfortable...........Allen........Hopefully I can get a tag this year to use all the junk I have............
