couesbitten Report post Posted February 19, 2004 Hello All, I'm new to this site, and thought maybe some of you guys/gals might be willing to point a fellow coues addict from WA state (a long long way from coues country) in the right direction. Have hunted coues once before in Dec. 2000. Myself and 2 friends drew tags for 36C. Had a great hunt and time. All harvested deer, no trophies, but all respectable 4x4's (counting eye gaurds). Now have 3 points, and want to use them in unit with best potential for trophy quality deer. I'm in good physical condition, and enjoy hunting wilderness areas, or any place that I can hike into and get away from crowds. Have looked at units 36C, 32, and 24B. 300 wsm Report post Posted February 19, 2004 I think you should stick with 36C. It is a great unit, and you have hunted and killed their before, so you know the area a little. CouesWhitetail Report post Posted February 19, 2004 All three of those are good units. I would look at draw odds too and see which you have a better chance of getting drawn for. I think that for the November hunts in those units, it's about 100 % chance of draw, but the Dec odds are much lower. And I think 36C is the lowest odds for that Dec hunt. I just got back from a javelina hunt in 36c. It was my first time in that unit, and man I couldn't believe the amount of deer. The WT were everywhere I looked. Didn't even have to try to glass them up. Even saw a decent buck harassing does. here are some photos of him. He was wider than his ears, but you can't really tell from these photos. Jason Report post Posted February 19, 2004 Couesbitten I think all of the Arizona units have tropies in them. You just have to put in your time scouting and pass on the smaller bucks during your hunt. If I don't get drawn and you do, you let me know and i will help you scout. I know that often times, big bucks are where you find them, but I just thought I'd throw my question out there to you folks who might be a little more knowledgable than I. Thanks to Jason for the offer to help me scout the area, as my living in Washington will not allow me to scout before I arrive to hunt, should I draw a tag. couesbitten Report post Posted February 21, 2004 Coueshunter, I've lived in WA most of my life, in the Tri-Cities area, but from '98 - '01, I lived in Tooele, UT.While living there, my friends and I drew our tags for 36C. That was still a 17 hour drive, but considerably closer than I am now. That hunt was probably one of the greatest hunts I have ever been on, and I'm addicted to these gorgeous little deer. coueshunter Report post Posted February 21, 2004 I grew up in Olympia and hunted another under-appreciated deer, the blacktail and it was tough in the thick brush. I started coues hunting three years ago and it is a completely different type of hunting and I love it. Glassing and the desert climate is great. Yes, it does have some resemblance to the Blue Mt. foothills, except that the last time I was in the Blue Mts., it was a sea of orange clad hunters, and I didn't have that problem when I hunted 36C.
