What is your longest "dry spell"?????

Recommended Posts

Ok, I generally post pics and articles bragging on a hunt that turned out well........ However, I have been on a bit of a dry spell in terms of calling in critters..

The question is; what is the most stands YOU have made before having a predator come in?

(I am not going to answer just yet, but let's just say it has been a ton in the last week.. I have used the same calls, mixed it up some, called areas that I have had success in the past, and some new country as well)

ok what is the longest run of bad luck any of you hard core callers have gone through??

7 but not in the same day. 3 in one day, then the following week went out again did another 3 stands and nothing. Again the week after and did another unsuccesful stand for a total of 7 stands with nothing to show up to my calls.

But also on the other hand....ther was one day I did 7 consecutive stands and called coyotes on all of them. I ended up killing 7 out of the 10 that showed up.

Had one bad stretch 2 years ago. I went 3 for 34 on stands. :-(. Not a fun month of calling, but I feel in the long run things even out.

This is a good topic.

I've been wanting to start predator calling and so do my boys.

This can give us a better idea about what it's really gonna be like when the rookies head out to give it a try!

Good post. It keeps things in perspective as one doesn't have success everytime.

It's tough to stick with it and/or wonder if we're doing things wrong. I guess persistence is key.

Very interesting post..thanks for starting it. Wow, Standman, that's is a rough month!!

ok, I will start with this.... I hosted a small calling contest last weekend and made 20 stands in one full day..... nothing came in at all! ( except for 5 doe mule deer) Now, I have been calling for 30 years with some good results........ I then gave it a rest and took my 11 year old son for a day and and 1/2 to a completely different spot for a day and a half and ............... nothing.... Did I lose my mojo or what?

When calling for bears, I would say 1 in 15 stands would pay off. This was what I call "cold calling", that is when you just set up and call without seeing a bear first. When you see the bear first, it was 50/50 they would either come running towards you, or running away from you.

For small predators, I have gone several days without anything, but then the next week I would be 3 for 3...

Just keep trying.

Also I think that depends what part or month of the year you are calling. To me the best months are November to January to call for coyotes, the rest is ok but those 3 months are the best.

I try not to keep track of the dry spells or I would get depressed and give it up for good, when you do have a great day you forget about the bad ones

when I first started it was bad, to the point I wanted to give up!

bought a few instructional videos and it started getting better.

some times I go 8-10 stands and nadda.

Probably average 5-6 sets now.

If you can go with someone experienced it will help tremendously!

went out a couple weeks ago and made about 9 sets and called up a cat on the last stand but my rifleman was above me about 75yds and he never saw it.

I've had quite a few bad days but mostly bad stand choices either in set up or too many people driving around.

Sometimes you have to walk a bit to find a good spot away from the crowds.

IMO October would be the best month if you can find a spot away from all else that is going on.

The pups are getting kicked out of the den and have to fin for themselves.

After that the colder it is the better! Cloudy days are awesome!

A few years so I had guys come out who were into the predator calling video making. Id send then pictures and stories etc and they came out for 3 days.... We saw two coyotes, one ran across a remote two track, dropped at 50 yards and they missed.the other we woke up walking into a stand and that's all we saw. The days of 10+ hours of calling a day..... To say it was rough is an understatement.

Ok, I am ready to toss a number into the hat.... I am being conservative to say 30 stands without a single call in! I spent a day in 42 from flats to mt. and another day in 21 from low desert to transitions country........ I love the advice on how to get it done.... Cracks me up... Next question would have to be what is your average. I took a guy from back east calling a couple years ago and he asked me my average I think I will start that story with another post.......
