Elkhunter1 Report post Posted April 25, 2012 Matt Walton and myself just got back a little while ago from the area in question. We drove all around the area checking gates and taking GPS readings of the locked gates and discussing all of the roads in the area. We also discussed the dangers of some of the access points to the area, we came to the same conclusion, the locked gate in question is the best point to get into the area. It would definitely be the safest one from the stand point of vehicular traffic. Matt told me he would talk to the unit officer as well as others to come up with a viable solution to the inherent dangers presented by the locked gate. AZGFD is and will always work with us hunters to resolve access issues when we give them accurate information and the time to complete the investigation as they may need to contact several federal, state, local agencies as well as private land lessee's. He works with USFS, State Land Dept. County Parks, and land lessee's to gain and or retain access to Public lands.

Elkhunter1 Report post Posted May 9, 2012 I recognize that gate...I had to take that one off the hinges one time to get OUT of that land. Matt and myself agree that location would be the safest location to access that entire area. He has to get them to keep it open.
audsley Report post Posted May 9, 2012 Elkhunter, if we had a dozen guys like you in southern Arizona, we'd make some headway on this problem. Unfortunately, too many hunters just find some other place to go because they don't have the time or inclination to fight for what should be ours. Thanks for your effort, and thanks to those others who have provided good factual information on the subject of state trust lands access.

There is a lot of work ahead and it would be nice to get a head count of the guys that would be willing to accompany me if I can get a meeting with some of the Commissioners of AZGFD. I will be calling Matt tomorrow to get a progress report on his efforts. Next step is the request for the sit down.

Let me know. During my conversation with Matt he brought up one of the solutions that would need a new fence to fence in a possible ADOT holding pen. My response was that I would help in the building of that fence. If that option is the one that is needed to obtain the open gate I will let you know how and when you can help. I have also pointed out other locations I have found locked gates on Trust Land, all are being looked into. Matt Walton of G&F is one of the best state workers I have had the pleasure of meeting. If any of you find a locked gate on State Trust Land you can contact me here or by phone (520)302-3097 I will need a good description of the location, GPS of the gates location would be the best as Matt uses it in his investigations. trophyhnter Report post Posted June 26, 2012 If the fence will be built in the ADOT right of way them most of the permitting Enviromental clearance, bugs and bunnies permits should not be a probem. If not, then the process can be a long furstrating process. Did Matt say what the timeline for a possible solution like the fence would be?

If not, then the process can be a long furstrating process. Did Matt say what the timeline for a possible solution like the fence would be? That fence we talked about is in the ADOT right of way. It would be between the Adot fencing along the highway and the lower fence off of the off ramp. The fence is a "just in case" senario so ADOT can secure equipment. He did not have a time line, but I will contact him in a week to get a feel for the opisition and if WE need to show how much "noise" we can muster at the meeting I will call for if needed.
