Jr Turkey OTC

Last year I took my boys into Unit 1, we hunted the last weekend with one of my good friends and his daughter. We had a blast, but the turkeys were almost completely non-responsive to calling. We all came home with great memories, but no birds.

 

I would like to get them out for opening weekend this year and was bummed Unit 1 is now closed for the jr hunt.

 

Does anyone have any recommendations or information on where a youth camp is being held? We're not really bird hunters so to speak and could probably use some help.

 

We are located in Tucson and would be hauling a camper, so closer the better I guess.

 

I would love to try and get my boys on some gobbling and strutting birds. They are both wanting to give round 2 a try.

Thanks Amanda! I checked out the link and looked into both camps. I sent Denny, the host of the Happy Jack Camp an email with a few questions.

 

It looks like we'll be headed up to 5B for some jr turkey action.

I volunteered at this one last year and plan on doing the same this year. Registration is open to the first 100 juniors, so don't delay if you are interested.

If I'm not mistaken, there is still a youth Unit 1 turkey hunt this Spring. Not to derail your thread in any way, gotcoues, and if there is ANYTHING I can do to help out the youth hunters in your camp, I'm there.

 

I just want to make sure nothing happened that I'm not aware of WRT some youth hunts in Unit 1 for turkey. I've got 3 unit 1 youth bird tags I hope to help out with.

You are correct in saying there is a unit 1 youth hunt but it is a draw and not over the counter this year. This was done as a result of the Wallow fire and the hit that turkey in the area took. Hopefully it will be opened back to over the counter in the near future if we get some good years of turkey production to bolster the population.
