AOA Report post Posted February 28, 2012 As the years go by, more and more newspapers are doing away with outdoor sections, especially related to hunting and fishing. I realize the internet has, for many people, taken the place of a newspaper, although for some of us, the newspaper is still a valuable source of information, whether you're reading it on-line or holding it in your hand. I've done a search, and the only ones that I have been able to find that provide any type of outdoors news are The White Mountain Independent (which, by the way, is a good source for some of the shenanigans going on with the National Forest), Kingman Daily Miner, Yuma Sun, and Payson Roundup. These four newspapers are the only ones that seem to have any interest at all in providing outdoor information. My question is if any one of you know of any others in Arizona that provide any kind of outdoor information. Let us know, and thank you. My link

billrquimby Report post Posted February 29, 2012 Take a look at the circulation numbers for the papers that still report on hunting and fishing news, and whether their markets are urban or still rural. Newspapers in the larger markets began purposely decreasing their hunting and fishing coverage in the late 1980s. Before I retired from the Tucson Citizen in 1994, I was told to reduce the emphasis on "blood sports" on the outdoors page and provide more coverage on "participant sports" such as hiking, birdwatching, mountain climbing and biking, parasailing and ballooning, wildlife and wild flower photography and similar things, including local charro and cowboy polo events. I resisted as much and as often as I could, but to no avail. It was one of the reasons I left after 27 years there. Another was suddenly being restricted to only one day outside the office to gather material for two columns and an outdoor page each week after a new publisher put me to work on the copy desk, editing and rewriting articles by other reporters four days a week. The final straw came when the paper began publishing barely disguised anti-hunting opinion pieces by two reporters as news stories on page one. ThomC Report post Posted February 29, 2012 I dont buy ink and paper anymore. The comments section on the internet stories of the ADS is better reading. More facts and less liberal pr. You are a lucky man Bill to have lived in the good old days. I always enjoyed your writing in the Citizen.
