huntersdb Report post Posted February 26, 2012 A couple years ago while planning a trip to Colorado, it struck me that finding basic information about hunting areas and unit wasn't as easy as it should be. Fast forward to this year and my biz partner and I have launched HuntersDB.com. Well, soft-launched is more like it. We're still working on putting the data up on the site. Eventually, we want to build a nationwide searchable, sortable hunting database. Right now, we're looking for feedback, suggestions and advice. Especially from hunters. What do you guys think? What kind of data and maps do you use? What would you like to see?

CouesWhitetail Report post Posted February 29, 2012 Wow, that's a really cool site! I like that you have the draw odds and hunt success and info on how many bonus points you need to draw tags. There is an amazing amount of info up there already and I can see you have a lot more to add. AZslim posted some suggestions about maps that I also think would be useful. huntersdb Report post Posted March 1, 2012 What do you mean by basic information? How easy do you want it to be? Just curious what you are really looking for here??? What do you mean by basic information? Odds, success, private land vs public land, map of the terrain. How easy do you want it to be? Really easy. I think that various wildlife agencies do a better job at this than others. For the most part...I can't really browse around a game and fish website looking for information. It's either in a PDF or several PDFs or it's hidden somewhere on the site. So, that's why we built HuntersDB.com. What am I looking for? Are we on the right track? Would you use this site? How do you guys research your hunts?
huntersdb Report post Posted March 1, 2012 Think its a good idea as long as you stick to basic info. Try not to list every water hole or good hunting spot. It is nice to have basic info such as maps and boundaries and such when hunting a new state. Site is set up really well already i might add. Looks good. I think we were sticking to basic info. Harvest, success, odds, private vs public land, maps...maybe some climate data. My favorite feature is the ability to download all the digital topos for a unit. We working on a way to zip those up into one file that you can download. That was something I couldn't find out there.

huntersdb Report post Posted March 1, 2012 unit boundries, roads, water, topography and vegetation shades Cool. We have some plans for some more detailed maps. Mostly roads, water and topography. I'm curious. What do you use to find vegetation shades now? Google maps?

It's a work in progress. The Arizona data was somewhat of a test. We're working the next couple of weeks to add the full Arizona data set. Elk, antelope, deer, javelina, turkey...etc. Then we will add states pretty regularly. I have Colorado elk and deer ready. Would love to add Mexico! Wonder if they keep track of all the big Coues they take down there?
azslim Report post Posted March 1, 2012 I used to buy 7.5 minute maps of an area I planned to hunt. My reasoning, 4 to 6 maps cost about the same as a tank of gas, but I could read a lot more of the terrain in my living room than the tank of gas would allow me to cover. Then when I went on the scout I could plan my route and make the most out of my trip. The shadings helped me determine areas to investigate, I've been known to do a little walking from time to time, especially into roadless areas.
