"Students protest in Whittier area. Students from Pioneer, California and Whittier high schools walked out of classes to protest the proposed Federal immigration bill March 27, 2006. The protestors raised the Mexican flag over the American flag and had the American flag flying upside down at Montebello High. "

desertsheep Report post Posted April 7, 2006 I bet most of those kids have never even been to Mexico. We should load them up and take them down there. Then do you think they would appreciate what they have in this great country. I can't believe that school adminstators would let that go on. These kids don't have any clue what they are even protesting about. desertsheep
az4life Report post Posted April 7, 2006 Well as a proud, yet frustrated American, I can seeThis topic is RED HOT and is not going to cool off with weak kneed self serving legislators re-writing the immigration rulebook pandering for votes. (Toss another log on the fire!) We Americans been sold out. The law says, send every illegal out of this country NOW! But No one will enforce it. This is insane, not Inhumane! When a Dam leaks, you try stop the flow, before you pump out the floodwaters. With the current swiss cheese border and "look the other way" enforcement and deportation plan, I fear we have little hope. This topic is not about hunting, but it is about the Arizona and American way of life. I will stop now before I too am outcast from the forum. Like any good camper, I will try to douse my burning embers. I have nothing against ANY Legal immigrant. America always has, and always will take in Legal immigrants. I pray that will not change. CouesWhitetail Report post Posted April 7, 2006 Here is a statement from the Montebello High School website. MONTEBELLO HIGH SCHOOL WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A CORRECTION We have received many phone calls and E-mails about the reports that Montebello High School students put up a Mexican flag and took down the American flag this past Monday. MONTEBELLO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS DID NOT TAKE PART. Students from the El Rancho HIGH School District and the Whittier Union High School District took part in this action. Our Administration, Staff, and students do not condone this action. We hope this clarifies the situation. Here is an article about that event. Teen disciplined for flag flipping Schools beef up security on Chavez holiday By Tracy Garcia Staff writer An El Rancho student was given an unspecified punishment Thursday in connection with flipping an AMerican flag at Montebello High on Monday. PICO RIVERA - A student protest that resulted in a Mexican flag being flown on top of an upside-down U.S. flag at a local school has prompted disciplinary action against one El Rancho High School student. El Rancho Unified School District officials said the unnamed student was punished for being involved in the flag incident, which took place Monday at Montebello High School, about four miles east of El Rancho High School. The punishment was consistent with the California Education Code, officials said. They did For More Info Photo Galleries: ? 03/28: Student protest ? 03/27: Student protest | ? 2 | ? 3 | ? 4 Video: ? 03/27: Bystander video ? 03/27: Student Protest not give further details because of legal and privacy issues. But Montebello Unified School District administrators said they were glad the neighboring district investigated the incident and took the proper action. "We appreciate the diligence that \ district has taken in identifying the student who allegedly committed the infraction with the flagpole incident," said Assistant Superintendent Robert G. Henke. Monday's image of the Montebello High flagpole sparked an uproar locally and across the nation after it was posted on various Web sites and featured in East Coast newspapers and national broadcast media. The incident took place about noon Monday, when a group of about 1,000 students from the El Rancho and Whittier Union High school districts marched through Pico Rivera to Montebello High, where students had walked out of classes in the previous week to protest proposed immigration reform legislation. By the time they reached Montebello High, the campus was on lockdown, district officials said. That's when the protesters ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- took to the flagpole, added the Mexican flag and turned the U.S. flag upside down. The school's California flag was stolen in the process, Henke said. Rumors that more student walkouts were scheduled for today, the official Cesar Chavez holiday, has prompted Whittier-area police and sheriff's agencies to step up their efforts, with authorities threatening to give $165 tickets to any student who is caught protesting during school hours. In addition, El Rancho officials have scheduled an after-school forum today where they will be "encouraged to air their concerns and opinions in a safe, structured, well-supervised environment," the district's statement said. "For the next several weeks, as the pending legislation works its way through Congress, the situation will be closely monitored by district personnel," El Rancho officials added. The Montebello Unified and Whittier Union High school districts have encouraged faculty to organize activities and dialogue to teach students positive methods of expressing their viewpoints. tracy.garcia@sgvn.com (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3051
DesertBull Report post Posted April 7, 2006 You would think that people coming HERE to this country to find a better life, would fly THIS countries flag proudly and not the one they just escaped from. It is their corrupt Government that caused them such hardship in thier homeland and not the USA. Mexico is a land rich in natural resources, fertile farmland, and desirable tourist destinations, yet instead of their Gov trying to develope that for the good of their own people, they would rather see them migrate out of the country. I don't get it.
COUESAZ Report post Posted April 7, 2006 It was here in AJ i think that the mexican students took down the flag and raised the mexico flag. Then some kids took down the mexico flag and put back up the USA flag and burned the mexico flag and the USA kids were arested for a hate crime. There are some schools here in the big city that are finishing the Aims test early so they can let there students attend the rallies and protests. If you ask me they are asking for some big time troubles in those schools. I see some real Gang troubles coming from this in the near future.
DesertBull Report post Posted April 7, 2006 I wonder if these schools would go out of their way to accomodate getting kids out of class to attend a hunter safety class or NRA rally.
crotalus Report post Posted April 8, 2006 Like every American, that photo irks me to no end. The "punks" that did that and who are emptying the schools are a symptom of a very terminal disease in our educational system and country. At least they got one thing right : The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property. Our country is in a world of hurt. It is a country that is "on the verge" so to speak. We have a corrupt congress, an administration that has lost its way and society looking to blame everyone else but its self for its woes. Oh Lord we need help! It is very sad and hurtful to watch all this unfold. As a "person of color" with Native American and Mexican heritige I watch with great trepidation. I live in Tucson and was raised in Arizona, dealt with the BP stops and not being allowed to swim in certain pools, etc. I thought I was over this but these types of post really open old wounds. Flammable post, you bet! I in no way condon any of the stuff that is going on in our nation in connection to so called immigration "rights". I only wish that the venom that is being spewed forth on both sides will subside and we can take a collective deep breath and stop in its tracks what the terrorist attacks only dreamed of doing. Illegal immigration hurts all involved no doubt about that, I only pray that we can get the power brokers to have the courage to take this issue on without turing it into a other country wrecking issue... Peace to all and my God continue to Bless America, Ernest

fatfootdoc Report post Posted April 11, 2006 They can pass all the laws they want but when they continually fail to enforce them it does no one any good. I am not personally against anyone coming here to work and contribute to the betterment of the US as long as it is done legally. The key word is legally, not undocumented or illegal, there has got to be a way that is enforceable to allow the legitimate workers who wish to come and experience the American Dream to do so with no repercussions. This would allow the US and the immigrant worker protection, the way that it is now there is not any, the other concerning thing is that it is not just Hispanics crossing illegally, there are many coming from terrorist nations as well. I voted for Bush as many on here did and he has got to show some testicular fortitude on this issue, he is really bunging things up all the way around at this time. The other issue is the amount of corruption(on both sides of the border) that is so prevalent, we have all heard the stories about the Mexican cops and soldiers coming into the US, why and why is nothing done about it by the US do we just conveniently overlook it? If we dont change our direction and attitude within the next 5-10 years we will no longer be THE Super power but a washed up has been state with no direction(or poor direction) and unconquerable problems!! What has happened to our once great nation? I worry about my kids growing up with this , if I am disillusioned now, what happens to them in 10-15 years? Oh well sorry so wordy! KGAINES Report post Posted April 11, 2006 The one problem that I had with the march is that when they interviewed people nobody gave a straight answer for what they were marching for, I think most of the kids just did it to get out of school. I don't have a problem with people wanting to come here and work, I also don't have a problem with them wanting to be US citizens, we are a great country and wanting to better yourself by coming here is respectable, but there are ways to do it and crossing the border illegally is not a good thing and shouldn't be encouraged. No matter what bill or law they pass there is going to be people that are not happy, I just hope they can come up with a resolution that is good for the United States and the citizens that live here. Good Luck and God Bless
az4life Report post Posted April 11, 2006 I do not have a problem with LEGAL immigrants, nor are you likely to find many US citizens who do. The fact is there are way to many illegals in the US and thye are the cause of the problems. Everyone has heard the government estimate of 12 million illegal aliens here right now. Many people believe that number is actually as high as 20 million, but lets stay with the 12 million estimate and do some quick math.... These Government statistics are from 7-2006. Yes it said 7-2006. CIA - World Population 298,000,000 US population 107,000,000 Mexico population 12,000,000 is the estimated number of illegal aliens are currently in the US The estimate of OTM (Other Than Mexican) illegals in the US is less than 1 million. 11,000,000 Mexican national citizens are illegally in the US. Based on the above government statistics; An estimated 4% of the people in the United States are here illegally. In simple terms, Nearly 1 in 20 people are illegally in the US. 10.2% of the Mexican population is living Illegally in the US right now. 1 of every 10 people born in Mexico is Living Illegally in the US. Quite shocking isn't it! This is more evidence that LEGAL immigration is not the problem. I could support a guest worker program, or an increase in the legal visas granted to those wishing to come to the US, But only if we enforce our current laws. Our country was built on the rule of law. Allowing illegal immigrants to mandate new laws just because there are millions of them is just wrong, on so many levels. If we cannot enforce current laws, why would anyone think we can enforce new ones. Do not take my word for it. Google it and find your own proof. Mine was from several US Gov't websites including the CIA world info site shown above.
