singleshot Report post Posted April 5, 2006 Just in time for this weeks march in Phoenix! Subject: Theodore Roosevelt on Immigrants - 1907 Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907. ? "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language.. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." couesdiehard Report post Posted April 6, 2006 singleshot, I agree with Teddy on the pride of being an American first but still am proud of my heritage as I would hope everyone should be. The thing I think a lot of us fail to realize is that for a lot of the people walking across that desert is that they aren't coming here to be Americans. They are coming to work at jobs that Americans will gladly have them do. Those that come here and decide to stay and make a life for themselves and their family still feel a really strong bond with the place they were born just like our first-generation ancestors did. Most wish that economics would allow them to stay and work in their country of origin, that not being the case they go where the demand is for their work and the money is available to make a better life. I think that we should offer a guest-worker program for those who want to come here just to work for limited periods of time. We should also offer a program allowing those guest-workers who want, to become citizens. Just my 2 cents Lee
singleshot Report post Posted April 6, 2006 Couesdiehard, Guest worker visa's are available to those who put in the effort. I have a friend who work's the family ranch for three months every year. He is a good man, very proud of his heritage, and speaks perfect english. He comes here to make money, not sponge off of the welfare system. What prompted me to post this was two nights ago while standing in line at the grocery, the four adults in front of me paid for $297.00 in groceries with the "magic" D.E.S. card that they watched the cashier swipe with awe. When she told them they had to pay cash for the case of beer, "No Comprende" eventually an interpreter was found. I once worked at this same store and saw plenty of white trash also load up on what the system had to offer, but at least they spoke english, were US citizens and at some point had probably contributed some tax dollars to the welfare fund. Makes me sick to see the protesters waving the red, white, and green flags in our streets while our boys are fighting and dying for the RED, WHITE, and BLUE.
