Guest oneshot Report post Posted January 20, 2012 YOU: I guess You came up with this idea while mucking out the stalls at your Unicorn ranch, or during a lull on your honeymoon after your gay marriage of placing these eye-sores along the trails in the Coronado National Forest. The tofu and tie-dye has reached toxic levels, and your free-range cotton and wool garments have caused a rash and a fever that makes YOU unable to respect public lands. If knowing that this is an illegal activity, with fines, doesnt give YOU pause and stop YOU from impacting in a negitive way others outdoor enjoyment, Please note that people that make these "spirit towers" are reincarnated into Dung Beetles with long life spans and a deep hunger... azgutpile Report post Posted January 20, 2012 "Spirit towers", I've never heard them called that before... Heck, if I called them that, I would assume they are all made by dirty hippy leaf lickers too and nocked them over. I've always called them Rock Cairns and figured they were a better alternative to blazing trees. Personally, if they were on a marked trail, i would leave them alone; however, if they are someones attempt to create a new trail nock away. Either way, 300 within a 1/2 mile is excessive. POB Report post Posted January 20, 2012 Iseem to remember when I was in Boy Scouts that we were taught those were trail markers or some such thing. Hope some troop of scouts don't get lost because you don't like the look of them.
azslim Report post Posted January 20, 2012 In Wyo we would run across sheep herder monuments, they had nothing better to do when the sheep were grazing so they'd pile up rocks. Some of them were pretty impressive in size and diameter. And in the 60's and 70's we would find claim markers, rocks piled up like that with an old Prince Albert can in it that protected the paper. I know that is not what these are, just thought I would share some info from different parts of the country. If they get lost on a main trail like you are talking about they probably shouldn't leave town.
Coach Report post Posted January 21, 2012 Yup, I've seen both kinds on different occasions. Usually, when I find them it's where someone wanted to remember to split off a trail or something. Up on the North Rim there's an area, seems it's off the loop that ends (or starts) at Wall Street where there are dozens, maybe hundreds of these things. I'm kind of surprised FS hasn't put the hammer down.
Snapshot Report post Posted January 21, 2012 Many years ago in unit unit 30B I found a couple of rock carns with an old mine deed inside a tobacco can. I only checked out the paper inside the can, but left everything as I found it.
Coues Sniper Report post Posted January 21, 2012 They're mine. I'm doing it soley to piss you off. If you've only knocked down 300 then you're lazy. I've easily put up 700. Walk the whole trail to find them all ya sissy.

AZLance Report post Posted January 21, 2012 I always got a kick out of moving the pile of rocks to a small deer trail that crossed the main trail, then throwing some vegatation on the main trail to hide it... funny to watch people start walking down the deer trail that went nowhere... firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted January 21, 2012 So, if my math is correct, and you have kicked over 300 of these in 1/2 mile, that would put a marker or 'spirit tower' every 8.8 feet.... Does that sound right or is 300 a SLIGHTLY inflated number?!
