mexican drug war deaths

Recommended Posts

the news today said that something like 46,000, that's fourty six thousand, folks have been killed in drug violence in mexico since 2006. 53,000 Americans died in vietnam. i think about 3000 have died in operation iraqi freedom, in iraq and afghanistan. i didn't look it up, but that what it seems like it was last i heard. i don't know why, but this really hit hard. there is an actual civil war going across the border from us. i mean war. not drug violence. war, combat, all that stuff. i knew the number was high but for some reason i've been sorta spacing it out i guess. this is nuts. and obama doesn't want us to enforce the border laws here? wierd. Mexico is clearly dangerous if you're in the drug trade or associate with anyone in the drug trade, or are an official or report on the drug trade. Maybe even if you're an innocent citizen.

Haven't heard too many stories of truly innocent touristas being harmed/killed though... ;)

Does truly suck that so many of the Mexican people are losing their lives! :(

Some of this is spilling over the border. The war is not just in mexco, it is in the US. Take a look at the Operation Detour program that is presented by Boarder Patrol.

46,000 over 5 years is 9200 per year in a country with a population of about 113,000,000. USA from 2006 to 2010 had over 80,000 murders with a population of about 312,000,000. Not a whole lot of difference there. In 2010 New Orleans had an average of 49 murders per 100,000 people. That would work out to over 55,000 murders in one year if their population was the same as Mexico's. I'm not trying to convince anyone that Mexico is perfectly safe or free of trouble, just pointing out that as long as you're not involved in the drug trade then there isn't a huge difference than a lot of places here. I have traveled in Mexico in my own vehicle many times and I still enjoy going down there. I use common sense and avoid certain areas, not any different than I would in downtown Phoenix.

i quit going to mexico a long time ago for reasons other than drug violence. just never could get comfortable there. my kids finally gave it up because they always had their stuff stolen, the last time by cops with machine guns. most of the folks getting killed are folks that are supposed to be the good guys. cops, school teachers, newspaper reporters, politicians, the bad guys are doing the killing. whatever the deal is, i didn't realize it was that crazy. and however you wanna compare the numbers to the US, this place is a lot safer than that place. i feel sorry for the mexicans. that is just bad. The violence in much worse in the northern part of Mexico. In Jaurez there were 3100 killed in 2010. That is over 300 per 100,000. Throughout the boarder region the deaths per 100,000 are astronomical verses anywhere in the US.

The U.S allows guns, Mexico does not. To the Liberal that campared the stat's. Also, the Cartels are already spread throughout the U.S since the 1980's. I would bet on my experince that half of U.S murder's are cartel related, so Lefty put that in your stats and see what you come up with. Do you read the paper, enternet, or watch the new,s? there is no comparison from mexico murder's and U.S murder's. How many people have you seen hanging from a freeway overpass. How many Beheaded bodies with messages on them do you see in the U.S? You will see more and more of this tactic in the U.S as long as WE (U.S) does little to secure the borders. The cartels are worldwide and will use tactics that third world countries use. WAKE UP U.S

Far from liberal or lefty. Just put up a few numbers, that's all. Pretty childish to resort to name calling over that. I never said things weren't bad in Mexico. Only said that I have been there many times and will continue to go. Why so quick to jump on the offensive?? All I was pointing out is that 9200 murders per year over a population of 113,000,000 is roughly 8 per 100,000 people, not a super high number when compared to a lot of other places. Common sense and avoiding certain areas will go a long ways in helping a person not be one of those 8. But I guess wanting to keep visiting Mexico makes me a "lefty liberal"

I can't wait until the day when I get to go hunt coues down there.

The big difference IMO is that when push comes to shove, I can shoot back or at the very least, dial 911 and know someone's coming to help ME and not them!

If we moved Congress and the White House to Juarez, I bet things would change fast.

Somebody here hit the nail in the head..... Those dead are known murders.

Someone also brought up bodies hung from over passes, severed heads thrown on night club dance floors, I have personally seen dozens of videos the public will never see. Anyone ever seen a guy get his head cut off with a Stihl chainsaw on video? It's not cute, made me lose my appetite and that's hard to do.

While agree most of it probably can be avoided, I'm not willing to be the one to put my neck (literally) on the line to test it.
