BigGameHunter Report post Posted January 11, 2012 First let me say, that my favorite part of every morning is signing into cousewhitetail.com and getting caught up on all the current events. However, after reading all the post, this morning, and seeing all the great photos of the recent kills it begs one question? Is that the deer I have been stalking?? I have 3 toads I have been chasing - and haven't seen them in a few days. Makes me wonder if these other hunters got my deer Just so that I can maintain my sanity - can you please list the unit you are slaying these monsters. It will help me sleep at night; as well as keep my confidence high that I have still have a shot.
stanley Report post Posted January 11, 2012 I think a lot of guys are shy about posting location, even the unit in a public forum. Unfortunately, in today's world it seems like the concerns are often warranted....... I would suggest that the next time you see a post of a deer that looks familiar, maybe send the hunter a private message. He or she might be a bit more willing to share that information privately. S. Tines Report post Posted January 11, 2012 I've been in your shoes thinking "my" buck might have been taken. It's a big stretch asking people to provide the unit on where their animal was taken and expect an honest answer. IMO the best way to go about doing it is like Stanley mentioned. You're also more likely to get cooperation if YOU provide details of where "YOUR" buck is located as opposed to some hunter you don't know sharing with you where HE shot it. Maybe even exchange photos and such to confirm. In the end, you don't need to know the unit. If this is a buck you've been watching for a while, you'll know if it's him. izquik72 Report post Posted January 11, 2012 That happened to me. I had photos of a buck that got away. A forum member PM'd me and it turns out it was the same buck he had hunted also. It sure makes the world a smaller place when that happens.
200"mulie Report post Posted January 11, 2012 Good luck with that! A lot of people wont post units where they got there's. To me every unit has some big one's....Some units more than others.
Coues&Bass Report post Posted January 11, 2012 I am almost positive a buck we were chasing in November was killed in December and posted on this forum. I recognized the back ground and the hunter shared his unit he killed. I figured he was about 90" to 95". The hunter that posted the pics said he was 95" gross. I do not think I will be looking for that buck this year. Just my 2 cents.
donniedent Report post Posted January 12, 2012 The units are so big, I don't mind sharing a unit number if someone asks unless.... I kill a monster in a monster deer area... then you only get a county name.
hesbinrubn Report post Posted January 13, 2012 I am glad this subject came up because i don't think that people talk about it that much. Ill start with saying I liked what everyone has had to say about it so far especially Stanley and Tines. And I don't blame you Biggame for wanted to find out if they were the same deer you were after. I will bring up that often guys talk about "my deer" or my "bull" Let me address first that until its dead in pictures with you its not yours. Many guys start to name bucks they see which I think is great. Too often times people name a buck that is a 20 inch 4 by and think that there aren't any other 4x4 deer in existence. Until you watch a buck for a while and really get to know different characteristics in his antlers and different body features and even behavior, its hard to say that you could pick him out of a line up. Some things are easy to distinguish like an abnormal point, or kickers, or drops. Most cases its public land so even a buck that I have named isn't mine and if someone is going after it before me, I back off. Just saying if you see a picture of a stud buck and don't know whether its "your deer" or not then obviously you haven't watched that deer enough and studied pictures, video, trail cam pics of the deer. I know a lot of bucks look the same but there are ways of being able to tell the difference. And people look at pics and the background and think its a certain area, ok guys the desert is huge and there are palo verdes everywhere and barrel cactus so don't think that just because you see a gigantic mountain with cactus and a 20" 4x4 that it is your deer and your spot. This is all out of respect good topic guys.
bigorange Report post Posted January 14, 2012 Good topic and agree. PM is the best way to go and consider sharing the unit or general area where you think the deer might have been killed. I got to talking to another hunter on here about my "white whale" last year and turns out he'd been after the same deer and had trailcam pics of it. Pretty sure that deer is still in the same area, so if I ever connect with it those cam pics will go in the collection. Also agree if you've been watching the deer you'll know it's the same one. Had a friend connect with one yesterday that he'd been seeing almost every day since New Years. Got to the point he knew it as soon as he saw it in the binos. It was a pretty unique old buck with great mass and palmated antlers so pretty recognizable. I personally have been trying hard to get it done this year and haven't taken a lot of time to study the bucks I've seen so far, just determine that they're "big enough" (and some days "any antlered deer" has been just that) and get after them. gbocardo Report post Posted January 21, 2012 I agree PM would be your best option. I helped my buddy glass a nice 4x4 he took and another member sent him a PM. Turned out was the same buck he had been picking up on a game cam.
