Blued stainless barrel?

Recommended Posts

One of my Rem 7mm mags has a stainless steel manufacture stamp on the barrel, yet the barrel is blued. The gun was given to me not long ago and I never noticed the stainless stamp until recently.

I was always under the impression that a stainless steel barrel could not be blued. Is this the case? If so, is there a chance that the core of the barrel is stainless and the outer is regular steel? One way or the other, how can I tell?

Thank you for the insight

Remington did this for sure and maybe Winchester. They used some sort of iron plating on the exterior surface that was then blued.

I am also interested in this issue; I also have a Rem 700 in 7mm mag that has the stainless steel stamp on it. I beleive mine was made in 1969. It has made me wonder too about a blued stainless steel barrel. Any insight on it would be appriciated. Thanks.
