Little DotShot's first whitetail

Recommended Posts

This is my oldest sons first deer of any sort. It was killed on the family ranch year before last and we just got it from the taxidermist today. I have hunted the same ranch for 17 years and have never got a shot at a buck like this and he was in the blind no more than 5 minutes, i didnt even have time to set up the video cam! Anyhow hope you all enjoy it as much as i am!

Youve ruined the kid for life, now every trip that he doesnt shoot one like that will be a disappointment. :)

Maybe I am missing something here, how have I ruined him? This was not a paid hunt on a big game ranch. This deer was killed off an open range, family ranch, one that i have hunted for 17 years. It is not managed for deer we just plant some food plots to help them out. I personally had never even got a shot at a buck like that in all the years i have hunted the ranch. It was his day plain and simple.... :)

There is more to the story than i had originally intended to state. The ranch that this deer was killed on is owned by my wifes sister and her husband. Cody ( my son who shot the deer) had always been his aunts favorite, she was diagnosed with lung cancer in early 2004 and had struggled in her battle but was still with us when we went down to the ranch to spend what would end up being our last Christmas with her. That deer was destined to be killed by my son while his Aunt was still alive so that she could share in his accomplishment. The last picture that was taken of my son and his aunt was taken by the local newspapers outdoor editor for entry into the big buck contest. Sadly my Sister in Law passed away in May of 2005 4 days after her 47th birthday. I for one do not beleive in coincidence so as i stated previosuly, that deer was destined to taken by my son and not only will I remember his accomplishment, but he will look at that mount and remember his aunt. So instead of ruining him, i think its a blessing. :)

I think Grizzly was just being sarcastic when he said you ruined him. Thats a heck of a buck and you're probably right when you said it was destiny. Sorry for your loss of a loved one. I've hunted down around Cotulla a few times but never got one like that. Congratulations to Little DotShot.

Geeeezzzzz,

Lighten up, it was just a joke.

My first antelope was high in the record books.

My second was also in the book, but much lower.

My third did not make the book.

Every time I get drawn, I hope to get a bigger one but that does not dimminish the first one.

It's not destiny or that the hunt is ruined, it's just natural human

expectations and behavior.

That's what keeps us out there and trying every year.

It's the thrill of the sport wether it be hitting a baseball or finding gold.

One always hopes to hit more home runs or find more gold than in the previous year.

It's the competative nature that resides in most of us. I am really satisfied yust to be out in the field, but it's fun to strive for the biggest. There it a temporary moment of failure and ruined expecations but it is soon replaced by a smile and the satisfaction that I did the best I could.

Don't be offended DotShot, it was just alittle humor.

lol

Wow great buck, congrats to your son.

I believe what was meant by your son being ruined is that it may be along time before he gets a buck anywhere near as big :)
