Bipod Preference?

Recommended Posts

I received such useful input about muzzle breaks that I thought Id keep the questions rolling...

As I mentioned in my previous post, I am doing some upgrades to my rifle set up in an effort to help myself become a more accurate marksman (although I know the main factor in doing so is putting time in behind the scope). I shoot a 700 7mm Rem Mag and would like to put a bipod on it. To this point I have shot from the prone position while using my pack for a rest. I have done some research and know there are a lot of bipod options out there.

What are your opinions on the bipods to choose from? Are there good bipods out there that are lighter weight but that I could easily remove while hiking and then reattach when getting ready to shoot?

Thanks again for the comments!

My buddy has a Caldwell. He loves it. I am looking at doing one too, so I'll follow this to see the thoughts. My only issue is getting one that would let you kneel or sit and still be able to use prone. Seems like most aren't that adjustable. I never like to force myself into one position. My dad did that on an antelope hunt a few years back and missed an opportunity at a monster because he couldn't see over the grass. If he'd have knelt he could have made the shot. Off hand was too risky due to the distance.

Harris Mod 25c, the one that cants, runs are $125.

The only Bipod I'll run. Its expensive, but I bet between my brother, dad, and I we've used it on probably 20+ critters, not including predators.

make sure it's a harris, the "shooters ridge" brand ones are made on the same blueprints (after the patent ended I guess) and are absolute JUNK! I bought one and the screws started falling out of it after one hunt. Took it back to the store and they said that nearly every one they sold had come back.

also look into the HB25 instead of the HB25C. The only difference is the "C" is 2 1/2" taller on its lowest postion and highest postion, it's a bit to high for me at both spots. The HB25 is perfect for me and I'm 5' 10". My bro is 6' and uses the HB25C. In my opinion the worst rest you can have other then no rest is one that is too high for you to comfortably shoot off of. If you are "hovering" you will miss. The HB25S and HB25CS are the same two bipods just that the both have the swivel feature (hence the "S"). Its actually a "cant" feature meaning you can level the gun on uneven ground, I wouldn't live without that.

My dad, being that he tends to be kind of tight and likes to buy stuff several times before he listens to me and gets the good stuff, bought one of those Shooters Ridge bipods... Holy piece of $hit! That thing took me an HOUR to put on becuse it barely opened enough, and it fell apart after about 2 miles in coues country! That next week he went out and bought a Harris. Used in in Africa, Mexico, New Mexico, etc... It is an awesome piece of gear. Adds some weight to the rifle for sure, but it is worth it!

I have used a Harris for at least 15 years. I use it constantly while hunting to keep my rifle out of the dirt. Pop out the legs and set it down, never have to look for a tree or bush to lean it against.
