BigMoqui Report post Posted March 8, 2006 I used my 270 win. these season to take a few yotes and my 36c pig, but I'm wondering what input some of you might have for the following rounds: 6mm Rem., 243 Win., and 25-06. I'm leaning toward the 06 and my least favorite is the 243. I know you could get the job done with a 223 or something in that range, but I aslo want to have a spare deer rifle for my nephews(I have 4 ages 6-13) who are going to be hunting big game very soon(as long as the moms will let them). I'm looking at another Rem 700 or possibly a CZ or Ruger, something small and light wieght. Any input on this would also be appreciated. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
coues addict Report post Posted March 8, 2006 Big Moqui Of the three calibers that you stated, your least favorite the .243 would be my favorite. BigMoqui Report post Posted March 8, 2006 Least favorite was a poor choice of words. Lets just say the numbers on the 25-06 are impressive so that's why I'm leaning that way. I'm not worried about recoil for me and the kids are tuff. The oldest was shooting my 12 super magnum at ducks this year. He'd only shot 22 rimfires and 12g 2 3/4 inch shells at clays and dove before this. I was wondering how he would react, after his first shot he turned to me with a S@#$ eatin' grin on his face. After that i knew he didn't care. By the way he shot 3 ducks on his first time out(better than my one ring neck for the trip). Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted March 8, 2006 i would stay away from the 6mm, tough to find ammo on. i have a 25-06 and ammo is limited, but i reload so its not a big deal. i got mins specifcially for varmints, coyotes, prarie dogs. and as a 3rd or 4th round couse gun ( behind 270wsm, 7mag, 270) i really like the caliber and you cant beat 75 grain Vmax movin along at 3500-3700 FPS!!! Red Rabbit Report post Posted March 9, 2006 For some rifle small and lightweight for your nephews used on deer and vermin, consider a Ruger compact or Remington Model 7 in 243, 7mm-08 or 308. Remington makes 125 grain Managed Recoil ammo for the 308. If you reload, I'd also consider the 260 Remington. For just yotes and pigs, I'd choose the 22-250 If this rifle is for you, the stock will probably be too long for your nephews, unless you buy an extra stock to cut down for their use. BigMoqui Report post Posted March 9, 2006 I also have a 300 wthby mag and a 30-06, besides the 270, and I was thinking of starting to reload. I really don't know anything about reloading, but won't the 25-06 use some of the same components that the 270 and 30-06 use. I'm just assuming here, as I said I don't know a thing about reloading. Again this gun will have open sights and be primarily for me for predators and javelina. I'd like it to be light weight so that if I wanted to pack it in somewhere while I'm backpacking it wouldn't be too heavy. BigMoqui Report post Posted March 9, 2006 All my other rifles are scoped except one of the 10/22s. I'd like to have a light weight open sight rifle for some serious hiking. Of course I want it drilled and tapped for a scope for the kids, but I've taken all my coyotes and pigs within 55 yards, and plus I just like open sights, especially for doing some serious climbing and descents in the hills. The 270 has open sights on it, and before I fitted it with a scope I was getting quarter size groupings at 100 yards. I'll admit that once I scoped it my shots were right on top of each other, but I'm pretty confident in my shooting at 100 yards or less with open sights, and again this rifle will be primarily for me to predator hunt and for javies @ under 100 yards. The nephew thing was just a side note, so far their moms are saying no big game hunting except for the youngest's mom, who says she doesn't care(my sis's kid), but it will be a few years until he's ready. The other kids mothers(inlaws) did not grow up around hunting and it was hard enough to convince the one to let the oldest go bird hunting this year. She eventually was broke down by Michaels constant begging, and she let him go dove hunting. He loved it and went out about 4 times with me last season. P.S. I know you all are probably sick of hearig this from 270, but he's right it's the best all around cal. I just like guns and want another one, I'm sure some of you can relate to that. I'm also in the market for a win or henry lever action in 45 long colt. Why you ask? I don't know, cause I like guns, I guess. that and I already own an 1873 revolver in long colt. Couesdeer Report post Posted March 14, 2006 I know this opinion has been stated already, but for a kid's rifle, and solely for the purpose of piggies and coyotes, the .243 sure is tough to beat..... Now if you start going after bigger species with the same rifle, I'd step up to the 25-06. (This, in no way, implies that I think you can't hunt deer with a .243, but better options do exist.)
