dtower Report post Posted December 15, 2011 Has anyone seen the Elk in 24A ? I see 5 tags issued each year and NO success. I saw pictures of Elk taken on El Capitan Pass in the 60's and heard some are seen in the Pinals once in a while. Is it worth putting in for this year ? Just thinkin out loud DT
AZwest16 Report post Posted December 15, 2011 I've seen elk in 24A and had a buddy find a shed as well. Wouldn't really want to use my bonus points on that tag though.
couesdiehard Report post Posted December 15, 2011 I don't think I would use my bonus points up on that draw. I would get an over the counter elk tag, which doesn't affect your bonus points, if you just want to hunt elk if you don't get drawn for a primo elk hunt. Just my 2 cents. Redman Report post Posted December 15, 2011 I've seen a bunch off the side of the highway just next to the San Carlos Res....but I wouldn't count on them being there to apply for the hunt
shylopolito Report post Posted December 15, 2011 When we were on 77, right before Globe in the last bit of that mountain range (not familiar with the name/area) just driving through we saw 2 elk off the side of the highway & that was a first for my dad who has probably driven through that area over 50 times. bonecollector Report post Posted December 15, 2011 Very tough to find them most of the time. They are usually on the reservation side of the fence.
ronaldo Report post Posted December 16, 2011 A friend of mine killed a nice 6x6 there a few years ago. He was one lucky SOB and he knew it. Just gotta catch em on the right side of the fence. I personally wouldnt waste any points on it. Ron
Mikea81 Report post Posted December 16, 2011 Got drawn there for the 2010 dec hunt, and got skunked not even a fresh track, but a month before that their were some good size bulls in there. You just gotta catch them at the right time
willhunt4coues Report post Posted December 16, 2011 I know where some great bulls are at in the unit. I also have a picture of an 8x8 at the same spot but they do just wonder back in forth from the rez to our side. The hunt is in sept so it should be a great hunt. Just depends it can be great then you can also get skunked if you have alot of bonus points I would put in for a better unit but thats my opinion.

billrquimby Report post Posted January 6, 2012 In the late 1940s, the Arizona Game and Fish Department still managed wildlife on all the reservations in Arizona. The San Carlos Apache cattle growers wanted all of the elk removed from that side of the Gila River, so the state held an "extermination" hunt with a long season and several hundred hunters. My father drew a tag and shot a 5x5 bull. The access to the tribe's portion of the mountain began at the Cutter sawmill. I was only about 10 or 11 years old at the time, and don't know much of the details, but I remember his saying the elk weren't hard to find. Bravo Report post Posted January 24, 2012 If you have zero points then go for it. If you know where to look there are some great bulls to be had. If you do your homework and hunt hard you can get it done, just watch the rez line. Easy to get screwed up and end up in Apache Territory by accident.
