Fact is, it is a judgement call that the WM's make while patroling. If you're driving slow and have your rifle (or shotgun for birds) at the 'ready', then you are at risk of getting a citation for road hunting. I once had a WM tell me that when he patrols during archery season that if someone is driving with their 'release' strapped to their wrist, and bow next to them then he may issue them a citation for road hunting (depending on what other behavior they are displaying.....). If you are driving down the road with a loaded rifle/shotgun sitting next to you on the seat or between your legs, then you are likely at risk for a 'road hunting' ticket.

I admit I am guilty of shooting coyotes from the truck , from the road , across a road (even a paved one) at a NF Campground and even in the city with a firearm..... Haven't got caught yet (knock on wood).... I hope the statute of limitations is up for these violations...... It's been a few years & I changed my ways , turned over a new leaf and got rid of old behaviors!

I didn't mean to stir up so much drama with this post. I acknowledged some errors on my part which I will not repeat, however I can't believe some of the posts that people put on here... Jim, are you implying that going into the field with your friend without a tag is in some way improper or illegal? I can not believe that you would suggest that if someone takes a buddy into the field with him that he is any less a hunter than someone else who has no friends to go with them... I was not getting paid for my services and did not have any means of taking game, so therefore I was legal... I don't know very many avid hunters, who if given the opportunity to spend a day in the field with a good friend vs. sit at home and watch hunting shows would pass the opportunity... unless that person has no friends that would like to take him with them...

The number of other jackwagons you see is inversely proportional to your distance from the nearest road. If you are always seeing jackwagons every time you go hunting, does that make you a jackwagon?

I feel your pain Kevin. I'd be incredibly pissed off and frustrated with the situation. Not much you can do besides get his plate numbers and call G&F next time.

 

I only saw one person mention knowing what your target is AND BEYOND! It's just not safe to spray and pray without knowing what's behind you. Kevin probably should have had blaze orange handy, but those guys should know what they're shooting at.

 

Also, it is disrespectful to the animal to shoot like that. I doubt there are many people on this forum that can hit a moving target the size of a deer's vitals at 200+ yards. Especially standing... Too much of a possibility of wounding the animal in my opinion.

 

Overall the whole thing sounds like a bad situation and the perpetrators clearly knew they were wrong since they packed up and took off in a hurry.

What do we call giant coues deer that are shot within sight of or near a road. I just figured out that i have more jackwagon in me than i originally thought, and these giant deer near the road are fellow jackwagons themselves. Better yet we could call big coues deer near a road "carp" deer because of their sheer ignorance in choosing a spot like that to live. Lol. Lots of rutting activity today, and looking forward to another morning.

I remember watching a "Wildlife Views" television program (sponsored by the AZGFD) years back where the AZGFD put a robo deer out near a road and then had the TV cameras rolling while officers hide in the bushes. There were many violators caught by this set-up. People who were sighted shot from an open jeep, from a pick-up, from the road bed, and from across the road bed. People not sighted were those who came to a stop, got out of the vehicle, moved off the same side of the road the deer was on, loaded their gun and then shot the fake deer.

 

This show actually became comical when multiple people were shooting the deer while officers were using bull-horns trying to tell them it was not a real deer. One father grabbed the rifle from a kid and shot the deer again when the kid's bullet failed to drop the deer. He was obviously showing his son the proper ethics of hunting.

 

This program kind of defined it for me and its' images have always stuck with me.

 

 

I personally have never run into a AZGFD officer on the road. That is because I seem to walk everywhere........mostly uphill !
